* Importing to TNG without deleting recent TNG entries?

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Importing to TNG without deleting recent TNG entries?

Post by kevinmerrison »

Hi, first let me say I'm seeking help on both this and the TNG forum to solve this one.

I continue to use FH6 as my 'master' record and have more recently started to enjoy using TNG to get other interested parties to engage and share with our research. I have no problem in Exporting the gedcom and media into TNG, thanks to Mike for the plug-in.

Until recently there was only myself updating, so I would use the plugin to capture everything in FH6 and then completely overwrite everything in TNG. There are now a couple of fellow researchers also engaged and they are able to update direct to TNG. Not full admin, but amend BMD, add comments and upload and link media. It is working well as they are happy putting good information about their branches, leaving me more time to look in other areas.

But...I don't seem to be able to work out the import settings to get my exported FH6 gedcom into TNG without overwriting their amendments/additions in TNG. I'm sure it must be possible, just cannot work it out? Can anyone help please?

I then search my FH6 export file for media since my last update to FH6 and upload it. But this doesn't seem to maintain the links to the records. Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you

Kevin

I am no TNG expert, but a Google search for TNG import GEDCOM and merger threw up lots of good suggestions.
Hopefully, some TNG experts can advise further.

However, my impression is that it is not at all easy, and you may need to modify your processes to make things easier.
It may be better for the other researchers to produce their branches independently for merging into your master TNG tree.

Or persuade them to use FH and use its File > Merge/Compare File features in your Project so that it is the true master database, and then revert to your original upload overwrite technique to TNG.

Regarding Media files, in order to cope with Face/Detail Frames, the exported filenames combine Record Id with ASID and Record Title, where the ASID identifies Face/Detail Frames, etc. They can change when Media tab settings are changed, so existing Media can change a whole raft of exported filenames and thus their Media record links in the exported GEDCOM, which won't match previous exports.
