* Brand newbie - rename imported Gedcom

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Brand newbie - rename imported Gedcom

Post by Kathy »

The first questions are always the dumb ones.
I have just imported a GEDCOM from MyHeritage and it has a cumbersome name consisting of letters and numbers.
How do I change it to a family name? I'd like to do this before I start working on it.
I currently have the trial version with the sample file loaded, plus a play file that I started to see how things work. And the messy-name one.
All suggestions gratefully accepted

The Project Window… (via the File menu) has on option on the More Tasks… button to Rename Project…. This is important because, as well as the GEDCOM file itself, the associated folders (that contain media files, etc.) must have exactly corresponding names.

Welcome to the FHUG Kathy - we spoke briefly by Email.

As a newcomer I advise you study how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and follow its links into the rest of our Knowledge Base. The Project Structure & Location section is most relevant in the current context.

For Peter's advice to work you need to have created a Project from the MyHeritage exported GEDCOM.
But I suspect you have simply opened the exported GEDCOM file, because if you had created a Project it would have offered the option to give it a meaningful family name.

Use the File > Project Window > New Project feature to Import a GEDCOM file and you can give it a New Project Name. The details are covered in the ƒh Book "Getting the Most From Family Historian" at the end of Chapter 1 Getting Started with the Focus Window and that ƒh Book is a key starting point in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.

Thanks Peter and Mike (and hi again Mike!)

I knew there would be a simple solution - I shall go through the Key Features as well.

Many thanks to both of you
Cheers, Kathy
