Ancestral Sources cannot find my Project in FH6

Post by JohnBradburn »

I have recently moved my FH6 Project Files on my Win 10 desktop PC (Chillblast) into my OneDrive folder so that I can also view and work on them on my Win 10 laptop (SP4). This seemed to go well and things have replicated between the copies on the two PCs albeit after some delay. I opted on both PCs to "always keep the file on this PC" so that I could always work offline if necessary.
I now want to use Ancestral Sources to add Census data to my Project so I have read all the User Guide info on AS and also I took a copy of my Main Project in FH6 on my desktop PC on which copy I have practised using AS to enter Census data. I noticed that there appeared to be duplicate copies of both the Copy Project and the original Main Project in my Projects file, but as everything worked OK, I continued and I deleted the copy Project as I had finished using it. Now that I want to use AS to enter Census info for real onto the Main Project File, I find that AS cannot see this Main Project in its selection window and I cannot use the Browse option to link it either. How can I link AS to my main Project File in order to start to work?
Snapshots of the File Explorer images of the Project File and of the AS selection window are available but I can't find any instructions on how or if I can attach them here.

To post screenshots see info:forums#posting_topics|> Posting Topics regarding Attachments.

I hope you used File > Project Window > More Tasks to Copy Project and Delete Project, and that your Main Project is still listed there alongside the Family Historian Sample Project that is useful for experimentation.

I suggest you use the Ancestral Sources Data Entry Plugin that guarantees AS is launched with the correct Project as well as the current Individual, etc.

Regarding the AS dialogue to Open Family Historian Project and the Browse option, are you opening the Family Historian Projects folder in the OneDrive folder or in the default Documents folder?
If the latter, then I suggest you delete that Family Historian Projects folder to avoid future confusion.

Have you tried the ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources tutorials that recommend working in the Family Historian Sample Project alongside your Main Project.

Thanks, Mike, for the quick and helpful reply.
I did use File>Project Window>More Tasks to make the copy project and to delete it.
I do make sure that I am opening the FH Project in the OneDrive folder.
I have followed your advice and installed the AS Data Entry plugin. This has located the correct Project first time and the Census Data entry is now proceeding correctly again.
For the record, I have tried to attach the screen shots to this reply so that you can see the strange disappearance of the main Project from the AS selection window. They have attached in reverse order and the fourth file will not attach (they are all .png files and don't add up to the 256KB max total size). I will try to attach the fourth file to an new reply below.
Thanks again.

The problem is almost certainly the Bradburn One-name Study has two GEDCOM and two FH Project files:
Bradburn One-name Study
Bradburn One-name Study-Chillblast
Does this Project appear in the FH File > Project Window ?

Move those two Bradburn One-name Study-Chillblast files elsewhere and I suspect that Project will return.
Do you know where those two files came from?

Diverging from the required FH Project folder structure can have dire effects.

I;m not familiar with OneDrive but using Dropbox and having the same project open on two PCs at the same time can result in the creation of "conflicted copies" -- two copies of a file with different updates from the different PC.

I wonder if something like that has happened here.

Updated: Just googled, and yes, OneDrive will create conflicted copies -- one of which will have the name of the Originating PC appended to the filename. Hence xxxx-Chillblast

Yes, why did I not think of that
Possibly caused by having FH open in the same Project on both PC which is NOT allowed both technically nor by the licence terms.

Might not have been FH that had the file open on both PCs -- FH on one and AS on another?

The important thing is not to have the project open on any two PCs at once.

Thanks to both of you and I think that your explanation of having FH6 open on both PCs at once is probably the answer to the cause of the file duplication. I wasn't aware of this as an issue. Microsoft doesn't seem to have ever published a detailed guide to OneDrive with things like this in it.
I am very undecided as to how to go about deleting the "secondary" instance of my main Project as it seems to occupy the same folder as the main instance and I fear that a straight deletion could affect files which they may both share.
I do have a full project backup but would prefer not to have to go down that route if not necessary.

The fh_proj files don't actually hold much information so I would just delete the "chilblast" one from the folder.

I would also check the .fh_data folder to check you don't also have a second .ged file.

If you do and are not sure which is the best one option is to do a file merge compare from the "master" gedcom and try merging in the chilblast version.

Thanks, Jane. Is it a fingers-crossed operation to delete these or should I be safe doing these deletions?
I seem also to be accumulating some quite large strange caches - see attachment.

Delete of the -Chillblast FH Project file is fine.

Just take note of Jane's advice regarding GEDCOM file, but if you have made no significant changes, then delete is fine.

Delete of all the -Chillblast and the -DESKTOP-... cache files will be fine.
They hold the FindMyPast and MyHeritage 'hints' but get refreshed as necessary.

In any case they only go to the Recycle Bin so if any problems arise they can be easily retrieved.

The deletion of the duplicate FH project file went OK .
There was a duplicate .ged file which I have also deleted without any apparent issues.
I closed my desktop and opened my laptop expecting to have to delete these duplicate files from the copy held on the laptop, but I found that the replication had already removed them.
Thanks to you Jane, Mike, and Cole Valley Girl for helping me to get out of my self-inflicted problems.
Now for the Censuses. I am a one-namer who has gone about it the wrong way round, starting at 1250 and working forward to 1850, most recently from the Parish Registers, and now I have to go from 1841 to 1911 with the Censuses.
