Combining identical source citations in reports

Post by Nickingham »

Hi,

I am running the latest version (6.2.5) but am having trouble trying to combine my identical source citations in reports.....

I have ticked the relevant box on the sources tab of the report options dialogue, and have checked that the citations are indeed identical. I'm not entirely sure, but I think the issue arises (i.e. two or more citations being produced for the same citation) when the particular citation has media added to it as, when I remove the media, they do seem to combine properly.

Many thanks if anyone has had this same issue and might be able to point out anything I have missed, or might be doing wrong.

Welcome to the FHUG Nick.

As you have discovered, the Citations (not just the Source record) must be absolutely identical in every field associated with those Citations. That includes all the obvious fields such as Entry Date, Assessment, Where within Source, Text From Source & Note, and also Event Type Responsible, and Multimedia linked directly to the Citation.

To avoid that Multimedia difference, consider linking it directly to the Fact that has the Citation, or to the Media tab of the Source record.

If it is not important to see the media attached to the citations you could force the citations to be combined by unticking the option to Show Source Citation Pictures. If all the other fields Mike mentioned above are identical the citations will then be combined.

Thanks Mike and Lorna for your advice and suggestions.

To keep things simple, I think I will adopt the practice of simply attaching the item to the source media tab going forwards.

Nick, that is the usual strategy for what we call Method 1 for 'source splitters'.

Not sure how long you have been using FH but study how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and in the current context review Sources Methods 1 & 2, but don't overlook all the other topics.

Nick,
The "Method 1" option seems to work very well. I have over 1,500 source documents set up that way and I have never run into any problems.

Thanks again for the guidance, Mike - and for the reassurance Bob. Method 1 will suit me best, I think.

Nick
