Introduction<\/h2>\n

As you work with Family Historian, you will come to realise exactly how customisable it is, and Facts are no exception; here are four very simple ways to make it easier to work with Facts.<\/p>\n

Adding or Removing a Fact on the Fast-Add Menu<\/h2>\n

By default the Fast Add menu<\/em> (opened using the Add Fact <\/em>button \"\"<\/em>) comes with a relatively short list of Fact Types on it, but you can add other facts that you use frequently or remove ones you don’t want to see there.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Click the Add Fact<\/em> button.<\/li>\n
  2. Click\u00a0More Fact Types…<\/em>to open the\u00a0Fact Types<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
  3. Select the Fact Type you want to show or remove, and click the More>> <\/em>button.<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. An additional set of buttons appears on the right of the Fact Types<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
  5. Click the\u00a0Edit…<\/em> button to open the\u00a0Fact Definition<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
  6. Ignore most of the content of this dialog for now (until you’re ready for more ambitious customisation).<\/li>\n
  7. Towards the bottom right of the dialog is a\u00a0Fast-Add Menu<\/em> checkbox. Tick it to show a Fact on the\u00a0Fast-Add Menu<\/em> or untick it to remove it.<\/li>\n
  8. Click the OK<\/em> button.<\/li>\n
  9. Click the\u00a0Close<\/em> button on the Fact Types<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Hiding a Fact Type<\/h2>\n

    You may decide you don’t want to see a fact at all. For example, we don’t recommend using the Family Census event (shown as Census (Family)) in the Fact Types<\/em> dialog.\u00a0 To hide a fact you don’t want to use:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Click the Add Fact<\/em> button.<\/li>\n
    2. Click\u00a0More Fact Types…<\/em>to open the\u00a0Fact Types<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
    3. Select the Fact Type you want to show or remove, and click the More>> <\/em>button.<\/em><\/li>\n
    4. An additional set of buttons appears on the right of the Fact Types<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
    5. Click the\u00a0Edit…<\/em> button to open the\u00a0Fact Definition<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n

      If you want to see hidden Facts, open the Fact Types <\/em>dialog and click the More>> <\/em>button.<\/em> In the button set that appears on the right, there’s a\u00a0Show Hidden<\/em> checkbox which toggles the display of hidden facts.<\/p>\n

      Change the Facts Shown on the Main Tab of the Individual Property Box<\/h2>\n

      Users often customise the\u00a0Main Tab<\/em> of the\u00a0Property Box<\/em> to display additional facts for convenience.. Adding and editing Facts is best done via the Facts Tab<\/em>, but viewing additional facts on the\u00a0Main Tab<\/em> lets you see key details very quickly.\u00a0 You may, for example, want to add Baptism in case you don’t have a Birth recorded, or Burial for instances where you haven’t recorded a Death.<\/p>\n

      To change the Facts shown on the Main Tab:<\/em><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Click on the\u00a0Menu<\/em> \"\" button on the\u00a0Property Box Main Toolbar<\/em> (at the top of the Property Box).<\/em><\/li>\n
      2. Select\u00a0Customize Data Entry…\u00a0<\/em> to open the\u00a0Customize Property Box<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
      3. Check that\u00a0Individual<\/em> is selected as the\u00a0Record Type<\/em>, and\u00a0Main<\/em> as the\u00a0Tab.<\/em><\/li>\n
      4. On the left are displayed the\u00a0Available Items<\/em>; these are the items available for you to display. By default, only the most-commonly used items are displayed, but there is a tick box for you to show all available items. On the right are the Selected Items, that is the items already displayed on the Main Tab.<\/em><\/li>\n
      5. Select items from the\u00a0Available Items<\/em> List that you want to add, and use the > \"\"\u00a0 button to add them.<\/li>\n
      6. Select items from the\u00a0Selected Items<\/em> List that you wish to remove and click the < \"\" button to remove them.<\/li>\n
      7. You can use the up \"\" and down \"\" buttons to change the order of items in the Selected List.<\/li>\n
      8. Once you’re happy, click OK.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Importing or Removing a Fact Set<\/h2>\n

        FHUG users have made a number of useful Fact Sets available at Download Type: Fact Sets.<\/a><\/p>\n

        To import a Fact Set:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Download the Fact Set you want to use.<\/li>\n
        2. Go to File > Import\/Export > Import > Fact Set…<\/a><\/li>\n
        3. in the file selection window that appears, select the file you downloaded and click\u00a0Open<\/em>.<\/li>\n
        4. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to install the selected fact set.<\/li>\n
        5. You will then get a message confirming success.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Double-clicking on a Fact Set file (which have file extensions .FHF) within Windows Explorer will also install the Fact Set.<\/p>\n

          If you decide you no longer wish to use a Fact Set, you can delete it.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Navigate to the\u00a0Facts Tab<\/em> of the\u00a0Property Box<\/em>.<\/li>\n
          2. Click the Add Fact\u00a0 \"\"\u00a0<\/em> button and select More Fact Types…\u00a0<\/em> to open the\u00a0Fact Types<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
          3. Click the\u00a0More>><\/em> button to open the additional set of buttons on the right hand side.<\/li>\n
          4. Click\u00a0Fact Sets…<\/em> to open the\u00a0Fact Sets<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n
          5. Select the Fact Set you want to remove and click\u00a0Delete<\/em>.<\/li>\n
          6. Confirm you want to proceed.<\/li>\n
          7. Click\u00a0Close<\/em> and then\u00a0Close<\/em> again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            You cannot delete the Standard Fact Set.<\/p>\n
