{"id":9756,"date":"2020-06-13T13:11:42","date_gmt":"2020-06-13T13:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=9756"},"modified":"2024-02-22T12:34:26","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T12:34:26","slug":"gedcom","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/gedcom\/","title":{"rendered":"Gedcom"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is GEDCOM?<\/h2>\n<p>GEDCOM is a &#8220;standard&#8221; format devised by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Church of the Latter Day Saints<\/a> to support GEnealogical Data COMmunication of family history records.<\/p>\n<p>There is an excellent and detailed article on the history and use of GEDCOM on the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20050216090321\/http:\/\/www.eogen.com:80\/GEDCOM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Encyclopedia of Genealogy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a useful <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gedcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GEDCOM page<\/a> in Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>As of version 7, Family Historian supports GEDCOM Standard Release 5.5.1.<\/p>\n<h3>Family Historian<\/h3>\n<p>Family Historian (<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>) stores its information directly in a GEDCOM file and (from <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> version 7) exports it by default as UTF-8 without a BOM, which will work for a variety of destinations. Earlier versions of <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> used different formats, so take care to check compatibility with your intended destination. In all versions, you may need to use addtionial tools to prepare your data.<\/p>\n<p>These tools include the <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/split-tree-helper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Split Tree Helper,<\/a> <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Import\/Export&nbsp&gt;&nbspExport&nbsp&gt;&nbspGEDCOM<\/a> File, <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/link\/rjt-family-historian-converter-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Utility ~ RJT Family Historian Converter<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/link\/res-privata-gedcom-privatisation-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Utility ~ Res Privata &#8211; Gedcom Privatisation<\/a>, and Family Historian Plugins such as <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk\/page\/plugin\/export-gedcom-file\">Export Gedcom File<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing worth remembering is that most other genealogy programs do not use GEDCOM as their standard format in the way <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> does, so when sending a file to people not using <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>, make sure you tell them they will need to use the Import or Merge option to load the GEDCOM data into their program.<\/p>\n<p>For more information see the Import and Export topics.<\/p>\n<h3>GEDCOM Extensions<\/h3>\n<p>The standard fields defined by GEDCOM have Tag names, such as SEX, DATE, NOTE, or NAME, that are followed by their data value.<\/p>\n<p>GEDCOM allows custom user-defined fields with an underscore (_) prefix on the field Tag names, such as _ROOT, _EMAIL, or _TYPE, to distinguish them from standard Tag names.<\/p>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> uses these to support additional functionality. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/gedcom-extension-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GEDCOM Extension List<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some genealogy products add custom fields without an underscore (_) prefix and are thus invalid GEDCOM.
