Named Lists and Record Flags have some uses in common, as you can see from the chapter on Named Lists and Record Flags in\u00a0“Getting the Most from Family Historian”<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em>However, as explained below,\u00a0Named Lists\u00a0have many more features than\u00a0Record Flags.<\/p>\n
Using Named Lists<\/h2>\n
To view or hide Named Lists:<\/p>\n
- \n
- Use\u00a0 View > Named Lists<\/a> and select a Named List; or<\/li>\n
- Open the Records Window<\/em> and use Lists > Named Lists Pane<\/a>;\u00a0 or<\/li>\n
- Click the Named Lists Pane

Once you have created a Named List, right-click on its name and you will see more options.<\/p>\n
Adding Records to a List<\/h3>\n
Manually<\/h4>\n
In the\u00a0Records Window<\/em> select both the desired records and the named list, then:<\/p>\n

- Use Lists > Add to Selected Named List<\/a>; or<\/li>\n
- Click the Add to Current List<\/em>
button; or<\/li>\n- Press the F4<\/strong> key.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Using a Query<\/h4>\n
In the\u00a0Result Set<\/em>\u00a0tab, use the\u00a0Query Menu<\/em>
Add Row Records to Named List<\/em> command to add all the records.<\/p>\nAlternatively, select specific records and use the\u00a0Query Menu<\/em>
Add Selected Cell Records to Named List <\/em>command.<\/p>\nUsing the Linked Records View<\/h4>\n
Select one record and use View > Record Links <\/a>. In the Record Links<\/em> dialogue, optionally select a subset of the records, and click the\u00a0
icon in bottom left corner to use the Add All\/Selection to Named List command.<\/p>\nRemoving Records from a List<\/h3>\n
Manually<\/h4>\n
In the Named List of Records, select those to be removed, then press the DELETE<\/strong> key or use Edit > Delete<\/a>, and take heed of the warning message.<\/p>\n
To remove all the Records, select the list name in the Named List Pane<\/em> and use Lists > Empty Named List<\/a>, or right-click the list name and choose the Empty List option, but there is no warning message.<\/p>\n
Using a Query<\/h4>\n
In the\u00a0Result Set\u00a0tab, use the\u00a0Query Menu
> Remove Row Records from Named List\u00a0to remove all the records found by the query.<\/p>\nTips and Tricks<\/h3>\n
Record Notes Pane<\/h4>\n
The unlabeled pane below the Records list allows notes to be added to each record that only apply to the list. For example, they can be used to explain why the record is in the list.<\/p>\n
The size of this notes pane and the two panes above can be adjusted by left-click & drag on the horizontal and vertical borders of the panes.<\/p>\n
List Properties<\/h4>\n
Select a Named List and use Lists > Named Lists Properties<\/a> or right-click and choose List Properties to see its details.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0List Name\u00a0may be as long and as descriptive as you like.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0List Note\u00a0can explain the purpose of the list in greater detail.<\/p>\n
For a more visible explanation of purpose, add a dedicated\u00a0Note\u00a0record to the top of the\u00a0Named List, and in its note pane at the bottom add a detailed description.<\/p>\n
Keep Current List Order<\/h4>\n
To retain the records in a Named List in a particular order, select the list and use Lists<\/a>\u00a0 or right-click and choose Keep Current List Order.<\/p>\n
The records can be rearranged at any time by clicking on column headings, but when the list is opened again the records will return to the preserved order.<\/p>\n
Named List Report<\/h2>\n
Use Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > List Report<\/a> and choose the Named List required. This only lists the Record Names & Record Id, plus their list Notes if any, but not any Configured Columns. To include all such columns see how to Customise or Print Records Window Columns<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Using a List in a Query<\/h2>\n
In a\u00a0Query Window<\/em>\u00a0on the\u00a0Rows\u00a0<\/em>tab use the\u00a0List\u00a0<\/em>tab, or use the\u00a0
=IsInList()<\/code>\u00a0function.<\/p>\nUsing a List in a Diagram<\/h2>\n
In a\u00a0Diagram Window<\/em>\u00a0open the\u00a0Options\u00a0and on the\u00a0Text\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Boxes\u00a0<\/em>tab use the\u00a0

Deleting a List<\/h2>\n
\nThere are various methods to delete any list via the Named List Pane<\/em>:<\/p>\n

- Right-click the list name and choose the\u00a0Delete List\u00a0option<\/li>\n
- Select the list name and use Lists > Delete Named List<\/a><\/li>\n
- Select the list name and press the Delete key or use Edit > Delete<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
