{"id":9458,"date":"2020-06-04T12:08:58","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T12:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=9458"},"modified":"2021-04-25T08:18:47","modified_gmt":"2021-04-25T08:18:47","slug":"recording-a-marriage-civil-partnership","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/recording-a-marriage-civil-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"Recording a Marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>You may have a Marriage Certificate or a Marriage Register Entry from a Church, Chapel, Synagogue or other religious venue, and want to understand how you record information from that Source. This article describes how you do that.<\/p>\n<p>A companion article discusses some of the issues associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/recording-a-civil-partnership\/\">Recording a Civil Partnership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Capturing Certificate Details<\/h2>\n<p>Certificate details for the couple should be captured in a Family\u00a0Marriage\u00a0Event with a Source Citation.<\/p>\n<p>Usually a Method 1 or \u2018source splitters\u2019 Source record will be created with a meaningful Title, a transcript in the Text From Source, and an image linked via the Media tab. Alternatively, a Method 2 or \u2018source lumpers\u2019 Source Citation will have one Source record for all Marriage Records, and each Citation will provide specific details including Media.<\/p>\n<p>Automatic Source Citations could be enabled, and associated Individuals such as parents and witnesses, created or updated with Residence and Occupation facts.<\/p>\n<p>A note on ages: Sometimes the Age is given as Full that is not allowed in a\u00a0GEDCOM\u00a0Age field, so enter &gt; 21 yrs, which is what it means (or &gt; whatever the relevant age of consent is at the time of the marriage). Sometimes Minor or Underage is given, and &lt; 21 yrs can be entered.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"search_hit\">Recording<\/span> Ceremony Witnesses<\/h2>\n<p>In this context, Witnesses are not just the Marriage Witnesses named on the Certificate, but may also be the minister, bridesmaids, best man, etc.<\/p>\n<p>From the perspective of the Witness Individual, those roles are not currently included in the <glwrap>Individual Records Window<\/glwrap>, nor Query or Diagram or Report, except for Narrative Reports.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses employ a non-standard GEDCOM structure not recognised by most other products, although this is partly mitigated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk\/page\/plugin\/export-gedcom-file\">Export Gedcom File<\/a> plugin that creates synthetic facts for the Witness roles.<\/p>\n<p>To list any roles in a <span class=\"search_hit\">marriage<\/span>, right-click the <span class=\"search_hit\">Marriage<\/span> Event and choose Witnesses, then use the Go To button and Locate Event for Witness to show their Property Box.<\/p>\n<h2>Using Ancestral Sources<\/h2>\n<p>Once you understand the data recording process including how to create and cite Source Records, all the above steps can be performed using Ancestral Sources in a convenient and reliable way.<\/p>\n<p>Ancestral Sources has options for recording the <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V6 Fact Witnesses but see <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/witness-facts\/\">Witness Facts<\/a> for further advice.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Family Events<\/h2>\n<p>Other standard GEDCOM Family events related to <span class=\"search_hit\">marriage<\/span> are Engagement, Divorce Filed, Divorce, Annulment, and Marriage Banns\/Contract\/Licence\/Settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Annulment effectively means the couple were Never Married and applying that Status makes the <span class=\"search_hit\">marriage<\/span> lines dotted in Diagrams.<\/p>\n<h2>Related Plugins<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk\/page\/plugin\/lookup-missing-bmd-records\">Lookup Missing BMD Records<\/a> plugin composes online searches for BMD records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"template":"","fh_version":[13,14,15,739],"skill_level":[18,17,16],"topic":[64,201,85,106,83],"class_list":["post-9458","kb_article","type-kb_article","status-publish","hentry","fh_version-v4","fh_version-v5","fh_version-v6","fh_version-v7","search_term-civil-partnership","search_term-marriage","search_term-marriage-certificate","skill_level-advanced","skill_level-intermediate","skill_level-newcomer","topic-entering-data","topic-facts","topic-family-relationships","topic-names","topic-sources-and-citations"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/kb_article\/9458","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/kb_article"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/kb_article"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9458"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"fh_version","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/fh_version?post=9458"},{"taxonomy":"skill_level","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/skill_level?post=9458"},{"taxonomy":"topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic?post=9458"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
