For licence problems see the <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/family-historian-licence-problems\/\">Family Historian Licence Problems<\/a> article.<\/p>\n<p>For more details on current installation issues try Family Historian&#8217;s own\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/support\/faq-inst\">Frequently Asked Installation Questions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One common solution to many problems is to right-click on the installation file <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> icon and choose <em>Run as administrator<\/em> from the dropdown menu that appears (the exact details may vary with different versions of Windows). You may have to enter an Administrator password. It may also be necessary to temporarily disable your anti-virus software, or to use Windows Safe Mode. Check that the Family Historian program is <strong>not<\/strong> running.<\/p>\n<h3>Windows Safe Mode<\/h3>\n<p>To enter\u00a0Safe Mode, ensure you are signed in to an\u00a0Administrator\u00a0account, and use one of the following methods.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Windows 8\u00a0or later, click the\u00a0Power\u00a0button, hold down the\u00a0Shift\u00a0key and click\u00a0Restart, or on\u00a0Windows 10, use\u00a0Start &gt; Settings &gt; Update &amp; Security &gt; Recovery &gt; Restart now. Then in\u00a0Choose an option\u00a0select\u00a0Troubleshoot &gt; Advanced options &gt; Startup Settings &gt; Restart\u00a0and finally the\u00a0Startup Settings\u00a0menu offers\u00a0Enter Safe Mode\u00a0via the\u00a0F4\u00a0key.<\/p>\n<p>When finished,\u00a0Restart\u00a0the PC as normal.<\/p>\n<h3>Windows Control Panel<\/h3>\n<p>In several places below, the advice refers to the Windows Control Panel, but if not sure how to access that, use the following methods from an Administrator account, which should work on all versions of Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Hold down the\u00a0Windows Logo\u00a0key while you press the letter\u00a0X\u00a0key, then select\u00a0Control Panel\u00a0from the menu. If that does not work, then enter\u00a0Control Panel\u00a0into the\u00a0Search\/Cortana\u00a0search box and choose the desktop app.<\/p>\n<h2>Error 126: DLL Maybe Missing, Corrupt or Wrong Version<\/h2>\n<p>Either\u00a0<code>zlib.dll<\/code>\u00a0or\u00a0<code>mfc100.dll<\/code>\u00a0or\u00a0<code>msvcr100.dll<\/code>\u00a0or some other\u00a0<code>.dll<\/code> file may be mentioned. It suggests the Microsoft Visual C++ package normally installed by <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> was not installed correctly or has been corrupted. It may happen if an upgrade is installed while <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> is still running.<\/p>\n<p>Close <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> and try reinstalling the <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> installation file. If unsuccessful then contact Calico Pie for assistance.<\/p>\n<h2>Error: This program does not support the version of Windows your computer is running<\/h2>\n<p>This may arise, especially with Windows 10, if you have a broken download installation file. So, either clear the browser cache, or use a different browser, and download the installation file again.<\/p>\n<p>To clear a browser cache:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internet Explorer\u00a0use\u00a0Tools &gt; Safety &gt; Delete browsing history\u00a0and tick just\u00a0Temporary Internet files.<\/li>\n<li>Firefox use Menu &gt; History &gt; Clear Recent History select Time range to clear and tick just Details &gt; Cache.<\/li>\n<li>Google Chrome use Menu &gt; History &gt; Clear browsing data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Error: Family Historian Stopped Working<\/h2>\n<p>If you get the error message &#8220;Family Historian has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly&#8221; it is probably due to the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) Windows feature. Try the fix explained by The installation works but Family Historian won\u2019t run. On Windows 10 use Start &gt; Settings &gt; System &gt; About &gt; System info &gt; Advanced system settings and apply the fix explained above.<\/p>\n<p>This error message has also been caused by anti-virus software such as BT Net Protect or McAfee. For full details see <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/forum\/viewtopic.php?&t=4617\">The McAfee Saga &#8211; Family Historian disappears<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If the message only occurs when viewing\u00a0Diagrams\u00a0then it may be a printer driver problem. On\u00a0Windows 10\u00a0use\u00a0Start &gt; Settings &gt; Devices &gt; Printers &amp; scanners, select the\u00a0Family Historian PDF\u00a0pseudo-printer, and click\u00a0Manage\u00a0button, then\u00a0Set as default. On earlier\u00a0Windows\u00a0use\u00a0Control Panel &gt; Devices and Printers, select the\u00a0Family Historian PDF\u00a0pseudo-printer, and choose\u00a0File &gt; Set as default printer. If this resolves the error message, then install or reinstall the latest driver for your printer, and reset it as\u00a0default printer.<\/p>\n<h2>Error: Family Historian Not Responding<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes the message Not Responding may appear in the window title bar. If <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> is busy, such as creating a backup or a report, then just wait for it to complete.<\/p>\n<p>It has been reported that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trusteer.com\/ProtectYourMoney\/\">IBM Security Trusteer Rapport\u00a0<\/a>can cause this problem intermittently, and the only known solution is to uninstall Trusteer Rapport. See Forum topic <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/forum\/viewtopic.php?&t=12625\">FH Not Reponding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Error: The system cannot find the file specified<\/h2>\n<p>This problem is associated with the Microsoft Security feature \u2018Controlled folder access&#8217; that blocks unauthorized or unsafe apps<br \/>\nfrom accessing or changing files in protected folders. It may arise when installing \u0192h or when saving a project, especially from a<br \/>\nnon-Administrator account. Alternatively, <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> can be added to the list of permitted apps that are allowed controlled folder access.<\/p>\n<h2>Error: Out of Memory<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes, when making considerable use of Media images, the Out of Memory message occurs, and <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> must be closed, if necessary by right-clicking its taskbar icon and choosing Close window.<\/p>\n<p>The message does not usually refer to physical memory use, but to reserved memory allocation, formally known as the Commit Charge. The Commit Charge Limit is the sum of PC RAM + Page File size, and that limit is being reached. Since RAM is costly and disk space almost free, the best workaround is to increase the Page File size, as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In\u00a0Windows 10, right-click\u00a0Start\u00a0(or in earlier versions open the\u00a0Control Panel) and choose\u00a0System.<\/li>\n<li>Click Advanced system settings top left to open the System Properties dialogue.<\/li>\n<li>On its Advanced tab under Performance click Settings to open the Performance Options.<\/li>\n<li>On its Advanced tab under Virtual memory it tells you the Total paging file size for all drives.<\/li>\n<li>To increase that value, click Change to open the Virtual Memory dialogue.<\/li>\n<li>Clear the Automatically manage paging file\u2026 tick box, and set the Custom size values in MB.<\/li>\n<li>Use the sizes listed lower down as a guide, and finally click the Set button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another setting that may help postpone the\u00a0Out of Memory\u00a0message is the\u00a0Thumbnail Images Cache:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> use Tools &gt; Preferences &gt; General tab, click the Advanced\u2026 button at the bottom, and set the Thumbnail Images: to Load When Needed.<\/li>\n<li>Locate and delete the Thumbcache.dat file within your Project Cache folder, which if the Project name is Example will be found at Documents\\Family Historian Projects\\Example\\Example.fh_data\\Cache\\.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See\u00a0Forum\u00a0topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/forum\/viewtopic.php?&t=15099\">&#8217;Out of Memory&#8217; when adding photo&#8217;s.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/forum\/viewtopic.php?&t=15018\">Out of memory warnings with 2 projects open<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/forum\/viewtopic.php?&t=14473\">Unable to load object<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Family Historian Installs But Won&#8217;t Run Properly<\/h2>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> may install OK, but when run, a Windows busy icon appears for a second or so, and then nothing happens. This may be caused by some NVIDIA graphics card OEM drivers. Go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.co.uk\/Download\/index.aspx?lang=en-uk\">NVIDIA site<\/a> where there is an option to detect your graphics card and send you the correct drivers.<\/p>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> may run, but when displaying any Diagram it crashes. Try setting the default Printer to Family Historian PDF, and if this fixes the problem, then your printer driver probably needs updating, especially if it is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samsung.com\/uk\/support\/download\/supportDownloadMain.do\">Samsung<\/a> model.<\/p>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> may run OK, but many links, icons, buttons and tabs do not work. It has been reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samsung.com\/uk\/support\/download\/supportDownloadMain.do\">WindowBlinds<\/a> is incompatible with <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> and has the above effect. However, it should be possible to exclude <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> from WindowBlinds.<\/p>\n<h2>Windows Security Warnings<\/h2>\n<p>If downloaded using Internet Explorer, the installation file may produce standard warnings such as &#8220;This type of file could harm your computer&#8221; or &#8220;The publisher of Family Historian couldn&#8217;t be verified&#8221;, but these can be safely ignored. You may need to select options such as Actions or More Options or Run Anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Google Chrome may produce a &#8220;File &#8216;\u2026&#8217; appears malicious warning&#8221; that can be ignored and the Keep option chosen.<\/p>\n<p>It has been said that\u00a0Safari\u00a0produces a similar warning, and the workaround was to use another browser such as\u00a0Internet Explorer\u00a0or\u00a0Firefox.<\/p>\n<p>If the install produces an\u00a0Open File &#8211; Security Warning\u00a0window due to an\u00a0Unknown Publisher, then right-click the downloaded file, choose\u00a0Properties\u00a0and on the\u00a0General\u00a0tab click the\u00a0Unblock\u00a0button followed by the\u00a0OK\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11284 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windowssmartscreen-300x132.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"176\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windowssmartscreen-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windowssmartscreen-150x66.png 150w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windowssmartscreen.png 650w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/176;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Windows 8\u00a0or later, when attempting to install a downloaded file, the following\u00a0SmartScreen\u00a0message may appear due an unknown publisher. Simply click\u00a0More info\u00a0and then\u00a0Run anyway\u00a0to continue the installation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gca-utility clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Windows 11 the messages may be rather different as shown below. In Edge, there is a red x saying it is unsafe, so click the 3 dots and select &#8216;keep&#8217; and &#8216;Keep anyway&#8217; to download the installation file.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12430 size-full aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Windows11Warning.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"814\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Windows11Warning.png 418w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Windows11Warning-154x300.png 154w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Windows11Warning-77x150.png 77w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 418px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 418\/814;\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Install Locks Up when Installing on Windows 8<\/h2>\n<p>This problem only affects a small number of\u00a0Windows 8\u00a0installations. Just after the license key is entered the PC locks up. If this happens leave the PC alone for a minimum of 4 hours and then reboot and try again.<\/p>\n<p>This only affects early <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V5 CD installs and earlier programmes; the latest download Version 5 does not have the problem.<\/p>\n<h2>Save As PDF File Output is Not Enabled<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes, even if it has worked before, the\u00a0Save Diagram\/Result Set\/Report As &gt; PDF File\u00a0options fail. This happens for several reasons such as the\u00a0Nova PDF\u00a0printer has been deleted, or the\u00a0Family Historian PDF (novaPDF\u2026printer)\u00a0program has been uninstalled, a Windows upgrade of some sort has damaged the printer for the PDF, or its print spooler has stalled. Try the following three options to resolve the problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Reinstallation<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use Windows 10\u00a0Start &gt; Settings &gt; Apps &amp; features\u00a0or Windows\u00a0Control Panel &gt; Programs and Features\u00a0and uninstall\u00a0Family Historian PDF (novaPDF\u2026printer)\u00a0if it exists. DO\u00a0NOT\u00a0uninstall\u00a0Family Historian\u00a0itself.<\/li>\n<li>For <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V5 or later, download and install from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/wp-content\/downloads\/install_fhnovapdf7.7.400.exe\">Family Historian PDF (novaPDF v7.7 printer) ~ install_fhnovapdf7.7.400.exe.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V4 reinstall the latest <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V4.1.3 free upgrade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Option 2: Print Spooler<\/h3>\n<p>If Windows 10\u00a0Start &gt; Settings &gt; Apps &amp; features\u00a0or Windows\u00a0Control Panel &gt; Programs and Features\u00a0lists\u00a0Family Historian PDF (novaPDF\u2026printer)\u00a0but it still fails, check and if necessary start the Windows\u00a0Print Spooler\u00a0that often fails after a Windows Restart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Control Panel &gt; Devices and Printers, then right-click the Family Historian PDF printer and select Troubleshoot that will say if the Spooler is not running, and will start it.<\/li>\n<li>Open Control Panel &gt; Administrative Tools and double-click Services, then scroll down to Print Spooler and if not Running, right-click and choose Start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Option 3: Microsoft Printer PDF<\/h3>\n<p>In\u00a0Windows 10\u00a0there is a\u00a0Microsoft Printer PDF\u00a0that can be used instead of\u00a0Family Historian PDF\u00a0in the\u00a0Print\u00a0window for most of the printing to PDF commands.<\/p>\n<h2>Copy &amp; Paste Facts Buttons Do Not Work<\/h2>\n<p>If in the Individual Property Box the Copy Fact(s) and Paste Fact(s) buttons do not work, then it is possibly a conflict with an Internet browser add-on called Skype ClickToCall.
