All your Project data and customisations should be inherited automatically by the new <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> version. However, it is always worthwhile performing a full backup of your data on your PC if you have backup software and also use the <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk\/page\/plugin\/backup-and-restore-family-historian-settings\">Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk\/page\/plugin\/backup-and-restore-family-historian-settings-via-windows\">Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings via Windows<\/a> to store all the <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> configuration settings.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to install <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> on an Apple Mac or Linux system with or without a Windows Licence then see <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/family-historian-on-mac-or-linux\/\">Family Historian &amp; Ancestral Sources on Mac or Linux<\/a> as this is not covered on the <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> website.<\/p>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/licence-agreements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">licence information<\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/support\/support-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support overview<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Questions can always be asked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FHUG Forum<\/a> if the answers cannot be found on any of the links on this page.<\/p>\n<h2>Post Installation<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"think_about_where_you_will_store_your_fh_data\" class=\"sectionedit2\">Think about where you will store your FH data<\/h3>\n<div class=\"level2\">\n<p>Once you install Family Historian (<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>) it will create a <em>Family Historian Projects Folder<\/em> in your <em>Documents Folder<\/em>. This is a sensible default for your information as it should be a folder that you backup on a regular basis anyway.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you want to change the location you can do so by clicking on the Project <em>Location<\/em> link at the base of the Project Window and selecting the folder you want to use instead.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11372 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2013-08-21_083932.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"313\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2013-08-21_083932.png 450w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2013-08-21_083932-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2013-08-21_083932-150x104.png 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/313;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you have changed the location, you can delete the original <em>Family Historian Projects Folder<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a copy of the <em>Family Historian Sample Project<\/em> either<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Move the one from the default folder to your new folder, or<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Click on the <em>More Tasks\u2026<\/em> button then select <em>Samples<\/em> then <em>Reset Sample Project<\/em>.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"backing_up\" class=\"sectionedit3\">Backing Up<\/h2>\n<div class=\"level2\">\n<p>As with all your other information on your computer, such as photographs, documents, etc, you should ensure your backup systems include your Family Historian data, see <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/backup-and-recovery\/\">Backup and Recovery<\/a> for detailed instructions on backing up Family Historian.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Creating an Installation Archive<\/h2>\n<glwrap>One frequent problem when reinstalling <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> is not being able to locate the software or the licence key. If you make an &#8216;Installation Archive&#8217; as soon as you have completed an install or upgrade, you should be able to find the licence and software again with ease.<\/p>\n<p>First, create an archive folder such as <code>\u2026\\Family Historian\u00a0Archive\\<\/code> in which to save all the Software Downloads and Licence Details.<\/p>\n<p>For each Full Version or Version Upgrade that you have purchased, save its installation Software Download file. The delivery Email from Calico Pie says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(5) After the upgrade has completed, you no longer need the file you downloaded. You may keep a single backup copy of it, however, and you are recommended to do so, in case you need to reinstall Family Historian, and re-apply the upgrade, in the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ignore the first sentence, and make an archive backup copy.<\/p>\n<p>Also export each associated\u00a0Licence Details\u00a0E-mail as a text file, or type in the\u00a0Licence Details\u00a0from a CD boxed set, and save them too. This makes it easy to Copy &amp; Paste the details during the installation process and avoid typing mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>Since <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V5 you only need to keep a few details and can delete earlier versions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Latest purchased installation\u00a0Software Download\u00a0file such as:\n<ul>\n<li>Full Version <code>install_fh6.0.0_dl.exe<\/code> with only one \u0192h version number<\/li>\n<li>Version Upgrade <code>upgrade_fh_v5_to_v6.0.0-dl.exe<\/code> with two different leading version digits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Its associated Licence Name &amp; Registration Key in the E-mail<\/li>\n<li>If it was a\u00a0Version Upgrade\u00a0then the previous version\u00a0Licence Name\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Registration Key\u00a0in the E-mail<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You could also save the Latest Free Upgrade Download to avoid the need to download it again.
