{"id":9171,"date":"2020-05-31T12:36:21","date_gmt":"2020-05-31T12:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=9171"},"modified":"2020-10-14T14:31:34","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T14:31:34","slug":"using-named-lists-to-track-your-research","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/using-named-lists-to-track-your-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Named Lists to Track Your Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 id=\"general_instructions_for_using_named_lists\" class=\"sectionedit2\">Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>Named Lists are a valuable tool for planning and tracking research.<\/p>\n<p>Before reading on, please consult the Family Historian help for generic instructions on <span class=\"search_hit\">using<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Lists. <\/span>What follows here is guidance specific to\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">using<\/span>\u00a0them to plan and\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">track<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">research<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"keeping_the_named_list_pane_in_view\" class=\"sectionedit3\">Keeping the\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List pane in view<\/h2>\n<div class=\"level2\">\n<p>The\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List pane, where you view your\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Lists<\/span>, is viewed alongside the Records List. You can toggle its visibility\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">using<\/span> <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\"><span&nbspclass=\"search_hit\">Lists<\/span>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<span&nbspclass=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>&nbspList&nbspPane<\/a> \u00a0or the corresponding Named <span class=\"search_hit\">Lists<\/span>\u00a0Pane\u00a0button. You can copy (by drag and drop) any record into the\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">named<\/span>\u00a0list.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gca-column one-third first\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9493 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/named_lists.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/named_lists.png 400w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/named_lists-300x239.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/named_lists-150x119.png 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/318;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"gca-column two-thirds\">This pane has three panels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">The top panel, that shows a list of of all the\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Lists<\/span>\u00a0in the current file, from which you can select an active\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">The middle panel, that shows a list or records in the selected\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List, from which you can select an active record.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">The bottom panel, in which you can see a note associated with the the active record\u00a0within the\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List\u00a0only \u2013 for example, an explanation of why the item is in the list or a detailed specification of the work you want to carry out on that item.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tip: If your screen is big enough you can view the Records List (including the\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List Pane) alongside another window such as the Focus Window by\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">using<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0Window &gt; Tile Vertically\u00a0or\u00a0Window &gt; Tile Horizontally\u00a0commands. And can adjust the slider between the Records List and the\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List Pane to hide the Records List if you wish. You will need to view the Records List and re-tile the windows every time you start\u00a0<span class=\"fh\">\u0192h<\/span> to restore the configuration.<\/div><div class=\"gca-utility vertical-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"querying\" class=\"sectionedit4\">Querying<\/h3>\n<div class=\"level3\">\n<p>To Query items in a list, In a Query Window on the Rows tab use the\u00a0List\u00a0tab, or use the\u00a0=IsInList()\u00a0function. However, you are limited to querying just a single type of item (Individual, Place, Note etc.) so if you have multiple items types in a\u00a0<span class=\"search_hit\">Named<\/span>\u00a0List you&#8217;ll need to do a query per item type.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"reporting\" class=\"sectionedit5\">Reporting<\/h3>\n<div class=\"level3\">\n<p>To Report on items in a List, you can use the\u00a0List Report\u00a0(under\u00a0Publish &gt; Miscellaneous Reports).
