{"id":8629,"date":"2020-05-13T08:57:01","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T08:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=8629"},"modified":"2026-01-16T10:27:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T10:27:20","slug":"family-historian-on-mac-or-linux","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/family-historian-on-mac-or-linux\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Historian on Mac, Linux, iOS, Android etc"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>Family Historian <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> is designed to run on Windows computers.\u00a0 Although FH6\/FH7 will run on any full version of Windows (not the now obsolete Windows RT) from Windows 7 onward, all Windows users should ensure that they have upgraded to Windows 11 (or Windows 10 with enhanced support until October 2026), as earlier versions are no longer supported by Microsoft and will be highly vulnerable to malicious attack over the internet.<\/p>\n<p>The use of <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> on either Mac or Linux computers is not supported by Calico Pie, but it is technically possible to install it on these systems with some limitations in compatibility or functionality.<\/p>\n<h3>Mac \/ Linux Options<\/h3>\n<p>There are two different ways of running <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> on Mac or Linux operating systems<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using a Virtual Machine<\/li>\n<li>Using an emulator such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winehq.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wine<\/a> or one of its variants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Virtual Machine<\/h4>\n<p>Both free and paid options are available.<\/p>\n<p>See Running <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/running-family-historian-on-a-virtual-machine\/\">Family Historian on a Virtual Machine<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Wine and its variants<\/h4>\n<p>Both free and paid options are available.<\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/running-family-historian-on-wine\/\">Running Family Historian on Wine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/running-family-historian-on-crossover\/\">Running Family Historian on Crossover<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/running-family-historian-on-playonlinux-mac\/\">Running Family Historian on PlayOnLinux\/Mac<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Phones and Tablets<\/h3>\n<p>It is not possible to run <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> on any non-Windows phone or tablet, so applications are limited to viewing an exported GEDCOM file.<\/p>\n<h4>Apple<\/h4>\n<p>Apple phones and tablets run two different Operating System (iOS and iPadOS, respectively). Applications for these devices can only be downloaded from the <a href=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple Store<\/a> and the best way to find currently available apps is to search for &#8216;gedcom&#8217; in the store, or follow the Links below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundin.nu\/gedexplorer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GedExplorer<\/a> loads <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> project GEDCOM and Media directly<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telgen.co.uk\/gedfamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GedFamilies<\/a> enables a GEDCOM file to be easily transferred to your iDevice<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ritter-demon.co.uk\/Projects\/gedview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GedView<\/a> can import a GEDCOM file and linked multimedia to an iDevice<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heredis.com\/en\/free-family-tree-app-for-phone-and-tablet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heredis<\/a> is free, can import a GEDCOM file from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk\/page\/plugin\/export-gedcom-file\">Export Gedcom File<\/a> Plugin, and allows subsequent editing on an iDevice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a way of displaying Family Historian created Family Tree HTML pages on an iPad (and Android) as described in Forum thread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/forum\/viewtopic.php?t=11112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FH CD-DVD viewing on ipad March 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Android<\/h4>\n<p>Android is the normal Operating System for non-Apple phones and tablets and there are a variety of applications available for it. The quick way to find them is to go to Android Apps on <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Play<\/a> and search for &#8216;Gedcom&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The Applications below use a Windows program to convert your Gedcom\/Project to a database file to be sent to your device.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telgen.co.uk\/gedfamilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GedFamilies<\/a> sends the GEDCOM file directly and handles attached media<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gedstarpro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GedStar Pro<\/a> can use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/install\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dropbox<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Drive<\/a> to transfer the file, and partially supports <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other Applications for Android that can read Family Historian Gedcom files, but may have some limitations on file size include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heredis.com\/en\/free-family-tree-app-for-phone-and-tablet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heredis<\/a> is free, can import a GEDCOM file from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk\/page\/plugin\/export-gedcom-file\">Export Gedcom File<\/a> Plugin, and allows subsequent editing on an Android device<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundin.nu\/gedexplorer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GedExplorer<\/a> loads <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> project GEDCOM and Media directly<\/li>\n<li>and others from <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Play Store<\/a>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Windows Surface Tablet and other tablets running a full version of Windows<\/h3>\n<p>These devices utilise the full version of Windows with a small touch-screen and no keyboard.
