Introduction<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This technique creates a Custom Attribute in which the Note field holds labelled details of Work In Progress or Research To Do for the associated Individual; and a dedicated custom Property Box Tab provides a convenient shortcut to create, access, and update these details.<\/p>\r\n

Be aware<\/strong>: Most aspects of this design support only one\u00a0<\/strong>To Do\u00a0Attribute per\u00a0Individual.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A summary of these details for all\u00a0Individuals\u00a0can be created using\u00a0Custom Queries\u00a0or by\u00a0Customise or Print Records Window Columns<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The Download To Do Lists<\/a> provides the predefined queries, reports, custom attribute and property box tab that you need to implement this approach, and can also form a starting point for your own customisations. What follows are some hints and tips for further customisation, and for following the approach.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Custom To-Do Attribute<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In \u0192h<\/span><\/span> V4 or earlier, whenever creating a To Do Attribute, enter the Date as 0001<\/em> and it will appear at the head of the Facts tab. Conversely, enter 9999<\/em> and it will appear at the bottom of the Facts tab.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n

It is intended that To Do tasks are added to the Note field, one paragraph per task, with a unique Label at the beginning of each paragraph, such as Birth<\/em>: or Baptism<\/em>: or Census<\/em>:. The benefit of these Labels will become clear later under\u00a0The Custom Queries<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Create Custom Column<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The\u00a0Result Set\u00a0of either of these\u00a0Queries\u00a0may be\u00a0Printed\u00a0or\u00a0Saved\u00a0to produce a\u00a0To Do Report.<\/p>\r\n

This\u00a0Query\u00a0will produce a list of every\u00a0Individual with a To Do entry, tabulated with a Column\u00a0for each task\u00a0Label.<\/p>\r\n

<\/a>How to Create A Custom Column<\/h3>\r\n

This technique adds one or more\u00a0Columns\u00a0to the\u00a0Individual Records Window\u00a0to identify\u00a0To Do\u00a0entries.<\/p>\r\n

Open the Individual Records Window (View > Records Lists > Individuals<\/a>, then select Lists > Configure Record Window Columns<\/a>).<\/p>\r\n

Scroll down the bottom of the left hand pane, select <Other…> and click the > button in the centre.<\/p>\r\n

Set the ‘Add Column’ fields as follows:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Now all\u00a0Individuals\u00a0with a\u00a0To Do\u00a0entry labelled\u00a0Birth:\u00a0are at the top of the\u00a0Record Window.<\/p>\r\n

To extend this idea for\u00a0To Do\u00a0entries with other\u00a0Labels\u00a0you could add a separate\u00a0Column\u00a0for each\u00a0Label. However, the following\u00a0Expression\u00a0combines them all into one\u00a0Column\u00a0but must be entered all on one line:<\/p>\r\n

Remember that you may want to customise any\u00a0Report\u00a0that you use regularly to exclude the\u00a0To Do\u00a0Attributes from the\u00a0Reports.<\/p>\r\n

To exclude the To Do Attribute, open the Report Options > Contents tab and under Individual Events\/Attributes select Exclude List.<\/p>\r\n
Click the Edit List button, and add the Attribute named To Do to the list by using the > \"\" button.<\/p>\r\n
Click the OK button once to exit List Editor and again to exit the Options > Content tab.<\/p>\r\n
