Introduction<\/h2>\n

This article describes the features that allow custom URL bookmarks to be added and edited to provide shortcuts for opening and searching Internet websites. The descriptions are correct for \u0192h<\/span><\/span> V7. Earlier versions have similar but fewer features.<\/p>\n

Web Search Window<\/h2>\n

Use the Internet > Open Web Search Window<\/a> command to display the Web Search Window<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After a URL has been entered into the address<\/glwrap> bar and opened then it can be saved as a Bookmark<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Click the star favourite icon or the …<\/strong> menu option Bookmark this Page…<\/em> to open the Add Bookmark<\/em> dialogue where the Name<\/em> and URL<\/em> can be edited before clicking the Add<\/em> button.<\/p>\n

Click the list favourites icon or the …<\/strong> menu option Search the Internet…<\/em> to display the Search the Internet<\/em> dialogue.<\/p>\n

Search the Internet<\/h2>\n

Use the Internet > Search the Internet…<\/a> command or one of the options above to display the Search the Internet<\/em> dialogue that lists Website<\/em> shortcuts and search parameters.<\/p>\n

The Show<\/em> droplist has four options:
\n\u00a0All<\/em> displays all the shortcuts
\n\u00a0Standard Sites Only<\/em> displays only the \u0192h<\/span><\/span> predefined shortcuts
\n\u00a0Bookmarks Only<\/em> displays only the Bookmark<\/em> shortcuts you have added
\n\u00a0‘Search Now’ Sites Only<\/em> displays only the shortcuts that allow Search Details<\/em><\/p>\n

The Search Details<\/em> parameters and Search Now<\/em> and Go To Site<\/em> buttons need no explanation.<\/p>\n

Click the More >><\/em> button to display a side panel of buttons to change, hide & show shortcuts.<\/p>\n

The Show<\/em> and Hide<\/em> buttons and the Show Hidden<\/em> option operate on all types of shortcuts.<\/p>\n

The New<\/em>, Edit<\/em> and Delete<\/em> buttons only operate on custom Bookmark<\/em> shortcuts.<\/p>\n

The New<\/em> button opens the Add Bookmark<\/em> dialogue which is the same as the Edit Bookmark<\/em> dialogue described below. After clicking the Add<\/em> button, the Bookmark<\/em> is added to the end of the Website<\/em> list but without its Name<\/em>, so immediately use the Edit<\/em> button otherwise the Bookmark<\/em> will not be saved. (This issue has been reported to CP.)<\/p>\n

The Edit<\/em> button opens the Edit Bookmark<\/em> dialogue to allow the shortcut to be changed. The Name<\/em> and URL<\/em> fields need no explanation. The Description<\/em> field holds the text displayed in the box below the Website<\/em> list when the Bookmark<\/em> is chosen. The Template<\/em> field enables the Search Details<\/em> and Search Now<\/em> feature.<\/p>\n

Template Format<\/h3>\n

The Template<\/em> field holds the full URL including search terms for the website. They typically need the name of a person and years to filter the search. So insert the Search Details<\/em> parameters into the URL to replace names and years by using the following codes:
\n<<<given>>><\/code> where a Given<\/em> name is needed
\n<<<last>>><\/code> where a Surname<\/em> is needed
\n<<<y1>>><\/code> where a Year Start<\/em> is needed
\n<<<y2>>><\/code> where a Year End<\/em> is needed<\/p>\n

e.g. https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/search\/?name=<<<givn>>>_<<<last>>>&birth=<<<y1>>>&death=<<<y2>><\/code><\/p>\n

Shortcut Files<\/h3>\n

The default standard Website<\/em> list is held in the C:\\ProgramData\\Calico Pie\\Family Historian\\Web Search\\Standard.fhi<\/code> file. There is no C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Family Historian\\...<\/code> master installation file.<\/p>\n

The current Website<\/em> working list is held in the C:\\Users\\<user>\\AppData\\Roaming\\Calico Pie\\Family Historian\\Preferences\\WebSearchSites.dat<\/code> file and includes the Type<\/code> and Hidden<\/code> status of each shortcut.<\/p>\n
