Windows Defender, and other anti-virus software, build in protection to stop less well-known applications from installing. They may also prevent applications from accessing your documents folder unless you give permission for them to do so. You may also get warnings when downloading Ancestral Sources in your browser.<\/p>\n

Warnings when downloading Ancestral Sources in Microsoft Edge<\/h2><\/summary>

<\/a>When the download has completed you may see a message like this at the bottom of the browser:<\/p>\n

If you click the 3 dots button you can select the\u00a0Keep<\/strong> option. You should also choose the\u00a0Report this file as safe<\/strong>. If enough people report the file as being safe, Microsoft will eventually accept that Ancestral Sources should be trusted.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Following this you will probably see a warning that\u00a0This app might harm your device<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Select the Show more<\/strong> option and click on\u00a0Keep anyway<\/strong>. You should then be able to go into your downloads folder and run the program to install it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n

Warnings when first installing Ancestral Sources<\/h2><\/summary>

<\/a>You may get a message that\u00a0Microsoft Defender Smartscreen<\/strong>\u00a0prevented an unrecognised app from starting<\/strong>. Click on\u00a0More info<\/strong> and then click the\u00a0Run anyway<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Ancestral Sources blocked from accessing documents - Windows built-in security<\/h2><\/summary>

<\/a>If you get warnings when you first run Ancestral Sources that it is unable to create a folder, copy a file or saving a template then this may be caused by Windows Defender blocking Ancestral Sources.<\/p>\n

You may spot an alert on the bottom right of the screen, similar to this:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This may be due to the Windows Security\u00a0Ransomware Protection<\/strong>. The steps to resolve this issue are as follows:<\/p>\n

1. Go to the Windows 10 start menu and type in Ransomware<\/strong> and then open the Ransomware Protection\u00a0<\/strong>application.<\/p>\n

2. If the Controlled folder access<\/strong> switch is on then this is almost certainly the cause of the blockage: Click on the Allow an app through controlled folder access<\/strong> link and go onto step 3 below. If the switch is off then you’ll need to investigate another cause for the blockage (ask in the Ancestral Sources forum<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n

3. On the\u00a0Allow an app through controlled folder access<\/strong> page, click on the\u00a0Add an allowed app<\/strong> button and select\u00a0Recently blocked app<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

4. Assuming Ancestral Sources.exe is in the list of recently blocked apps, click on the +<\/strong> button to unblock it. And then click Close<\/strong>. You should now be able to run Ancestral Sources without errors.<\/p>\n

Ancestral Sources blocked from accessing documents - Norton 360<\/h2><\/summary>

Norton 360 has a feature called Data Protector<\/a>. If this is enabled it is likely to stop Ancestral Sources from accessing the Documents folder. Use the Add or remove a process from Data Protector exclusion<\/strong> option to exclude Ancestral Sources from Data Protector. The screenshots illustrating the steps required were supplied by j9sunny on the FHUG forums.<\/p>\n

  1. Open your Norton device security product.<\/li>\n
  2. If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.<\/li>\n
  3. In the Norton product main window, click Settings > Antivirus.<\/li>\n
  4. In the Antivirus window, click the Data Protector tab.<\/li>\n
  5. If the data protector is not turned on then it is unlikely that the Data Protector is the source of your problem.<\/li>\n
  6. On the Process Exclusion row, click Configure.<\/li>\n
  7. To add a process for Data Protector exclusion, click Add and then choose the process.<\/li>\n
  8. Click Apply and then click OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
