{"id":11590,"date":"2022-10-13T16:15:03","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T16:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=11590"},"modified":"2022-10-13T16:15:03","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T16:15:03","slug":"customising-v7-to-use-v6-style-sources","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/customising-v7-to-use-v6-style-sources\/","title":{"rendered":"Customising V7 Display for Generic Sources to Resemble V6"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>Some people who upgrade to Family Historian 7 to take advantage of some of its new features (such as formatted text) will prefer to continue using Generic Sources rather than adopting Templated Sources, perhaps to maintain consistency with data previously entered, or because they do not want to learn a new way of working, or because they don&#8217;t feel the effort involved in changing existing sources is justified, or they worry that exporting their data to other product will become more difficult.<\/p>\n<glwrap>Newcomers to <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> may also choose to work only with Generic Sources for simplicity or to ease exporting data to other products.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the reason(s) for not adopting Templated Sources, here is some guidance on configuring <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>7 to look and behave as closely as possible to <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>6 when working with Generic Sources.<\/p>\n<h2>Source Property Box and Citation Window<\/h2>\n<p>The <em>Main<\/em> tab of the Source <em>Property Box<\/em> can be customised to look as far as possible like the Property Box in <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>6 :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open the Property Box for a Generic Source<\/li>\n<li>Click the <em>Cog<\/em> menu button <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"cs_v alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/helpv6\/familyconnectionmapper_6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"20\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 32px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 32\/20;\" \/> and select <em>Customise Property Box&#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Make sure the <em>Tab<\/em> field is set to <em>Main (generic)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Locate <em>Text from Source<\/em> in the list of available items in the left hand pane and move it to the right hand pane using the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"cs_v alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/helpv6\/edittextschemedialog_3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"27\" height=\"21\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 27px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 18\/20;\" \/> buttons to place it under the <i>Text from Source <\/i>field.<\/li>\n<li>With the Note item selected, select <em>View\/Edit<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Set <em>Height<\/em> to <code>Variable<\/code> and adjust <code>Weight<\/code> to reflect the share of the vertical space you want this item to occupy.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>OK<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>OK<\/em> again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following these instructions will also customise the <em>Citation Window<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It is not possible to hide the separate tabs for <em>Text from Source<\/em> or <em>Notes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Records Window<\/h2>\n<p>You can hide references to <em>Template<\/em> in the <glwrap><\/glwrap>Source Records Window<\/glwrap> as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open the Source Records Window via <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">View&nbsp&gt;&nbspOther&nbspRecords&nbspLists&gt;&nbspSources<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Right click on any column heading and select\u00a0<em>Configure Columns<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Locate Template in the right hand pane and move it to the left hand pane using the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"cs_v alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/helpv6\/edittextschemedialog_4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"27\" height=\"21\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 27px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 27\/21;\" \/> button.<\/li>\n<li>If you wish, select Generic Type in the right hand pane, click the Edit button and change the\u00a0<em>Heading <\/em>to <code>Type<\/code> and click\u00a0<em>OK<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>OK<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Bibliography and Footnotes<\/h2>\n<glwrap><span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>7 has introduced Footnote and Bibliography entries for both Generic and Templated Sources, which can be included in Reports or used to display source information e.g. when viewing the citations for a fact.<\/glwrap>\n<p>In <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>6 there was no option to customise how sources were displayed in (e.g.) the <em>Source Pane<\/em>; however, you could (to some extend) customise how they appeared in Reports via <em>Report Options<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>7, you can customise how Generic Source Titles, Footnotes and Bibliographies are constructed and formatted, via <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Tools&nbsp&gt;&nbspPreferences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the Sources tab itself, you can customise the style for the Source Title: See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/help\/fh7\/hh_start.htm#preferencesdialogsourcestab.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Preferences Dialog: Sources<\/a> for Help.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Generic Source Formats<\/em> to customise the content of Footnotes, Short Footnotes and Bibliography entries. See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/help\/fh7\/hh_start.htm#genericsourceformatsdialog.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Generic Source Formats Dialog<\/a> for Help.<\/li>\n<li>In the Generic Source Formats dialog, you can also <em>View Format <\/em>to see the template for the presentation in question, or\u00a0<em>Customize<\/em> to edit the presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no way to vary the display according to the Source Type: &#8216;one size fits all&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have formatted the elements you intend to use, you can:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Choose what is displayed in the Citation List Pane, by clicking on the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"cs_v alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/helpv6\/familyconnectionmapper_6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"20\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 32px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 32\/20;\" \/> icon at the bottom of the Source Pane and choosing <em>Display Citation As &gt;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>When viewing a Report, select <em>Options&#8230;<\/em>and then the S<em>ources tab<\/em> to configure whether and how the elements you customised above are displayed.
