All the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-working-with-options\/\">Options<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-working-with-templates\/\">Templates<\/a>, and\u00a0Tools\u00a0settings apply equally to all Projects, but they can be different in each Windows User Account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They are based on very old versions of Ancestral Sources and Family Historian, so do not include some of the features that are now available such as templated sources and rich-text. Videos that refer to those new features are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ancestral Sources Videos<\/a> page. However, the fundamental concepts are still reasonably relevant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the tutorials the notation \u2018Option1\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Option2\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Option3\u00a0button\u2019 means select menubar\u00a0Option1, then\u00a0Option2, and finally click the\u00a0Option3\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>It is feasible to copy &amp; paste many of the data values from the tutorial scripts directly into\u00a0Ancestral Sources\u00a0input forms.<\/p>\n<p>Before you start the tutorials please <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-configure-initial-settings\/\">Configure Initial Settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>Add Unrelated Individual<\/h3><\/summary><div class=\"lightweight-accordion-body\"><p>In addition to the\u00a0Add Parent\u2026,\u00a0Add Spouse\u2026,\u00a0Add Sibling\u2026, and\u00a0Add Child\u2026\u00a0links there is also an\u00a0Add Unrelated Individual\u00a0option.<\/p>\n<h3>New Unrelated Individual<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Ancestral Sources and ensure the Family Historian Sample Project opens by default, but if not then <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-configure-initial-settings\/\">Configure Initial Settings<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the\u00a0+ Add unrelated individual\u00a0button near the middle of the toolbar, or use menubar\u00a0Edit\u00a0&gt;\u00a0New unrelated individual\u00a0option.<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11455 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addindividual.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"184\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addindividual.png 400w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addindividual-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addindividual-150x69.png 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/184;\" \/>In the\u00a0Name\u00a0field type in any name using the format\u00a0First Names \/Surname\/.<\/li>\n<li>Select the\u00a0Gender\u00a0from the drop-down list.<\/li>\n<li>If\u00a0Census Editor\u00a0mode applies, there is an option to\u00a0Add to entry following creation of individual, that will create the new individual and add them to the census grid in a single step.<\/li>\n<li>Finally click\u00a0OK.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Individual\u00a0record will be added to Family Historian with the record\u00a0ID\u00a0shown only when the current data entry is saved.<\/li>\n<li>Use menubar option\u00a0Edit\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Review\/remove individual data changes\u2026, select the Individual just created and click the\u00a0Delete\u00a0button to undo the entry.<\/li>\n<li>Close\u00a0Ancestral Sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>Add Images to Sources<\/h3><\/summary><div class=\"lightweight-accordion-body\"><p>Sometimes supporting images or media only come to light after a data entry has been committed to Family Historian.<\/p>\n<p>These images or media can be added to a Source record using the Family Historian add\u00a0Multimedia\u00a0options, or by using the Ancestral Sources\u00a0Add Images to Existing Sources\u00a0tools. Note that any type of media file can be added, not just image files.<\/p>\n<h3>Add Images to Existing Sources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Ancestral Sources and ensure the Family Historian Sample Project opens by default, but if not then<a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-configure-initial-settings\/\"> Configure Initial Settings<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>This tutorial works best if the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-enter-baptism-facts\/\">Enter Baptism Facts<\/a>\u00a0tutorial has been completed, which creates a Source record without images.<\/li>\n<li>Select the\u00a0+Existing Sources\u00a0mode by clicking the\u00a0Add images to existing sources\u00a0button to the right of the toolbar, or by choosing\u00a0View\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Add Images to Existing Sources.<\/li>\n<li>From the\u00a0Type\u00a0drop-down list choose\u00a0Baptism\u00a0and tick\u00a0Only display sources without images.<\/li>\n<li>From the\u00a0Source\u00a0drop-down list choose\u00a0Baptism Newton, Surrey, England 9 May 1837 Arthur Hodges.<\/li>\n<li>If this Source does not exist, try another\u00a0Type\u00a0or un-tick\u00a0Only display sources without images.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11457 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addimages.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"515\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addimages.png 700w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addimages-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/addimages-150x110.png 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 700px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 700\/515;\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To open the\u00a0Image Viewer, either use\u00a0Edit\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Add\/View Images\u2026\u00a0or click the\u00a0Add\/View Images\u00a0link in the\u00a0Linked Images\u00a0panel.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure the\u00a0Link new image\u00a0option is selected, then click the\u00a0Select File\u2026\u00a0button, and\u00a0Open\u00a0any image file, perhaps from\u00a0My Pictures. This image file should appear in the image panel on the left.<\/li>\n<li>You can in fact add any type of file, not just image files. In the\u00a0Open\u00a0file window, near the lower right corner, it lists\u00a0Image Files (<code>*.bmp;*.gif;*.jpg;*.jpeg;*.pcx;*.tif;*.png;*.tga;*.wmf<\/code>), and to the right of this list is a black triangular arrow. Click on that arrow and from the drop-down list choose\u00a0All Files (*.*). You will then be able to select any file type to attach to the source. Although the file might not display within the\u00a0Image Viewer, clicking on the area where the image would normally be displayed will open the default program for that file type. e.g. If you attach a word-processor document then it might open Microsoft Word.<\/li>\n<li>There are several options for specifying the\u00a0Image Title\u00a0and the\u00a0Linked Filename\u00a0of the\u00a0Multimedia Record.<br \/>\nOne option, beyond the scope of this tutorial, allows the Image Title to be customised by a template that compiles data from a variety of sources. See the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-working-with-templates\/\">Title &amp; Type Templates<\/a>\u00a0tutorial for details.<\/li>\n<li>For this tutorial select\u00a0Same as source title\u00a0and tick\u00a0Rename file to match title, which neatly assigns the same\u00a0Title\u00a0to the\u00a0Multimedia Record\u00a0and\u00a0Image Filename\u00a0as the\u00a0Source Record.<\/li>\n<li>There is also an option to choose Keywords to classify the image.<\/li>\n<li>Now click the\u00a0Save\u00a0button at the bottom.<\/li>\n<li>If using Family Historian Version 4.1 (or later) there may be a prompt to choose the Media folder into which to eventually copy the image file. Click the Yes button, and in the popup click New Folder, create a Baptism folder, and click OK.
