Introduction<\/h2>\n

The tutorials for entering facts all focus on the default installation templates of Ancestral Sources, which for many users will be fine, but the templates offer ways to customise how certain features work. All the Options<\/a>, Templates, and Tools<\/a>\u00a0settings apply equally to all Projects, but they can be different in each Windows User Account.<\/p>\n

They are based on very old versions of Ancestral Sources and Family Historian, so do not include some of the features that are now available such as templated sources and rich-text. Videos that refer to those new features are available on the Ancestral Sources Videos<\/a> page. However, the fundamental concepts are still reasonably relevant.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some of the features of customising or creating templates are intended for more advanced users, but even beginners should be aware of the fundamental capabilities.<\/p>\n

Throughout the tutorials the notation \u2018Option1\u00a0>\u00a0Option2\u00a0>\u00a0Option3\u00a0button\u2019 means select menubar\u00a0Option1, then\u00a0Option2, and finally click the\u00a0Option3\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

It is feasible to copy & paste many of the data values from the tutorial scripts directly into\u00a0Ancestral Sources\u00a0input forms.<\/p>\n

Concepts, Keywords and Functions<\/h3><\/summary>

Ancestral Sources\u00a0allows many of its features to be customised with templates that change the way data is presented in a convenient and consistent manner.<\/p>\n

Remember to use\u00a0Help\u00a0to obtain extra advice, and hover the mouse over buttons and boxes to obtain a brief\u00a0Tooltip.<\/p>\n

Concepts<\/h3>\n

Most of the templates use Keywords, such as {DATE} and {ADDR}, that represent current values entered while capturing the event data. For example, {DATE} represents the Date of the event, while {ADDR} represents the Address where the event took place. This is very similar to the way Family Historian defines a Fact Sentence using Template Codes.<\/p>\n

Some templates support\u00a0Functions\u00a0that allow values to be managed. For example,\u00a0=UPPER[{ADDR}]\u00a0coverts the\u00a0Address\u00a0to uppercase, and\u00a0=IF[{ADDR}|{ADDR}|<Not Recorded>]\u00a0yields the\u00a0Address\u00a0if it exists, otherwise\u00a0<Not Recorded>. These are similar to\u00a0Functions\u00a0in\u00a0Family Historian\u00a0and are intended for advanced users.<\/p>\n

Other templates use a variety of options and parameters to define their behaviour and are intended for advanced users. See Associated Individual Types<\/a> and Census Grid Templates<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n
