Videos that refer to those new features are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ancestral Sources Videos<\/a> page. However, the fundamental concepts of capturing the data are still reasonably relevant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a series of videos on\u00a0How to Add a Census Entry\u00a0showing the key features of the tutorials.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the tutorial the notation \u2018Option1\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Option2\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Option3\u00a0button\u2019 means select menubar\u00a0Option1, then\u00a0Option2, and finally click the\u00a0Option3\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>It is feasible to copy &amp; paste many of the data values from the tutorial scripts directly into\u00a0Ancestral Sources\u00a0input forms.<\/p>\n<p>Before you proceed with the rest of this tutorial, please <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-configure-initial-settings\/\">Configure Initial Settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For each tutorial there is a corresponding <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/enter-census-video-tutorials\/\">video tutorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>1. It is suggested that you add leading zeros to these numbers to make them 4 digits, 3 digits, 2 digits, and 3 digits respectively, because the\u00a0Source Records\u00a0will then sort into a more logical order.<\/p>\n<p>The transcript\u00a0Registration District\u00a0should be entered into the\u00a0Place\u00a0field, and the transcript\u00a0Address\u00a0into the\u00a0Address\u00a0field (e.g.\u00a0Place: Guildford, Surrey, England\u00a0and\u00a0Address: 28, Park Road, Stoke Within, Guildford).<\/p>\n<p>These will become the\u00a0Place\u00a0and\u00a0Address\u00a0values used in the\u00a0Census Events\u00a0and other\u00a0Events\u00a0created by\u00a0Ancestral Sources.<\/p>\n<p>If there are matching\u00a0Place\u00a0or\u00a0Address\u00a0values in your GEDCOM data, then these fields will auto-complete and the\u00a0Address\u00a0values will be available from a drop-down list.<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0Place\u00a0is entered, it is also added into the\u00a0Title.<\/p>\n<p>It is popular to include the\u00a0Head\u00a0of the family in the\u00a0Title\u00a0and this can be achieved by entering his name in the\u00a0Other Info\u00a0field (e.g.\u00a0Other Info: CHILDS, Rupert).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11395 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/censusinformation.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"789\" height=\"272\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/censusinformation.png 789w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/censusinformation-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/censusinformation-150x52.png 150w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/censusinformation-768x265.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 789px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 789\/272;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is beyond the scope of this tutorial, but the\u00a0Title\u00a0field can be customised by a template that compiles data from a variety of sources.<br \/>\nSee the menubar Tools &gt; Options &gt; Census settings &gt; Census Method 1 Title Template option and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-working-with-templates\/\">Title &amp; Type Templates<\/a> tutorial for details.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>2. This image file should appear in the image panel on the left.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the\u00a0Census Return\u00a0spans two\u00a0Folio Pages, in which case both image files should be linked so the whole family is included.<\/p>\n<p>You can add any type of file, not just image files. In the Open file window, near the lower right corner, it lists Image Files (<code>*.bmp;*.gif;*.jpg;*.jpeg;*.pcx;*.tif;*.png;*.tga;*.wmf<\/code>), and to the right of this list is a black triangular arrow. Click on that arrow and from the drop-down list choose\u00a0All Files (*.*). You will then be able to select any file type to attach to the source. Although the file might not display within the\u00a0Image Viewer, clicking on the area where the image would normally be displayed will open the default program for that file type. e.g. Attach a word-processor document and it might open Microsoft Word, or a PDF document might open Adobe Acrobat.<\/p>\n<p>There are several options for specifying the\u00a0Image Title\u00a0and the\u00a0Linked Filename\u00a0of the\u00a0Multimedia Record.<br \/>\nOne option, beyond the scope of this tutorial, allows the Image Title to be customised by a template that compiles data from a variety of sources.<\/p>\n<p>See the menubar Tools &gt; Options &gt; Census settings &gt; Census Image Title Template option and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-working-with-templates\/\">Title &amp; Type Templates<\/a> tutorial for details.<\/p>\n<p>For this tutorial select\u00a0Same as source title\u00a0and tick\u00a0Rename file to match title, which neatly assigns the same\u00a0Title\u00a0to the\u00a0Multimedia Record\u00a0and\u00a0Image Filename\u00a0as the\u00a0Source Record.<\/p>\n<p>There is also an option to choose Keywords to classify the image.<\/p>\n<p>Now click the\u00a0Save\u00a0button at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>If using Family Historian Version 4.1 (or later) there may be a prompt to choose the Media folder into which to eventually copy the image file.\u00a0 Click the Yes button, and in the popup click New Folder, create a Census folder, and click OK.<br \/>\nHowever, if you placed the image file directly into the\u00a0Media\u00a0folder or sub-folder, then this prompt is bypassed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11397 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/imageviewersavecopy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"608\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/imageviewersavecopy.png 600w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/imageviewersavecopy-296x300.png 296w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/imageviewersavecopy-148x150.png 148w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/608;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Towards the top of the window, tick\u00a0Always on top, and close the right-hand panel by clicking the tall thin button labelled\u00a0&gt;. Drag the window edges to reduce the window size as far as possible. This allows the image to be inspected while entering data on the main screen.<\/p>\n<p>If you prefer to enter data from a printed copy, then close the\u00a0Image Viewer\u00a0window by clicking its\u00a0Close\u00a0button, and obtain a printout of the\u00a0<code>1901_RG13_0603_052_10.jpg<\/code> census image file.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>3. Populate the Census Grid<\/h3><\/summary><div class=\"lightweight-accordion-body\"><p>The next step is to populate the census grid in the centre of the main screen, which imitates much of the data tabulated on the census form.<\/p>\n<p>Hover the mouse over each column heading and the popup tooltip should match the column heading on the census form.<\/p>\n<h3>Select Family Members<\/h3>\n<p>To choose the\u00a0Head\u00a0of the household, enter the start of the surname (Chi) into the\u00a0Find Name\u00a0box above the family names, and select\u00a0Rupert\u00a0from the list. Notice that his family is listed under\u00a0Spouses\u00a0and\u00a0Children\u00a0below.<\/p>\n<p>To add\u00a0Rupert\u00a0to the census grid as\u00a0Head\u00a0of the family, click the\u00a0&lt;&lt; Select\u00a0button, or use\u00a0Edit\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Add current individual to the entry.<\/p>\n<p>Double click on his spouse\u00a0Janet\u00a0and child\u00a0Julian\u00a0to add them to the census grid as\u00a0Wife\u00a0and\u00a0Son.<\/p>\n<p>The census image and transcript also list his daughter\u00a0Martha, who does not yet exist in the database.<br \/>\nTo add\u00a0Martha, click on the\u00a0Add Child\u2026\u00a0link bottom right, and in the popup select\u00a0Rupert and Janet\u00a0as parents.<br \/>\nEnter\u00a0Martha\u00a0at the start of the\u00a0Name\u00a0box, select\u00a0Gender\u00a0as\u00a0Female, and tick\u00a0Add to entry following creation of individual.<br \/>\nClick\u00a0OK\u00a0and note that\u00a0Martha\u00a0is added to the list of\u00a0Children\u00a0and to the census grid as\u00a0Daughter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11398 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/familyaddchild.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"463\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/familyaddchild.png 800w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/familyaddchild-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/familyaddchild-150x87.png 150w, https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/familyaddchild-768x444.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/463;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notes:<\/p>\n<p>To undo this\u00a0Martha\u00a0child entry, you would use\u00a0Edit &gt; Review\/remove individual data changes.<br \/>\nTo add other relatives use the\u00a0Add Parent\u2026,\u00a0Add Spouse\u2026,\u00a0Add Sibling\u2026\u00a0links.<br \/>\nTo add a completely new unrelated person click the + Add unrelated individual button near the middle of the toolbar, or use menubar Edit &gt; New unrelated individual option as explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/ancestral-sources-tutorial-working-with-tools\/\">Ancestral Sources Tutorial ~ Working With Tools ~ (1) Unrelated Individuals.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Check the Census Grid<\/h2>\n<p>Now the Son Julian and Daughter Martha are not in the same order as in the census transcript and image form.<br \/>\nTo correct this, click the up arrow button\u00a0Move selected row up in the census grid, or use\u00a0Edit\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Move selected individual up in the census grid.<\/p>\n<p>Check that the marriage\u00a0Condition\u00a0is shown as\u00a0M\u00a0= Married for the parents and\u00a0S\u00a0= Single for the children.
