{"id":11253,"date":"2020-09-01T15:41:41","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T15:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=11253"},"modified":"2021-03-09T17:49:05","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T17:49:05","slug":"an-overview-of-diagrams-and-charts","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/an-overview-of-diagrams-and-charts\/","title":{"rendered":"An Overview of Diagrams and Charts"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>One of Family\u00a0Historian&#8217;s strengths is its interactive Diagrams and Charts, which can be used in a number of ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Browsing and exploring your tree visually<\/li>\n<li>Entering and editing data<\/li>\n<li>Navigating to an individual of interest<\/li>\n<li>Producing a Chart to share information with others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These possibilities as well as the differences between a Diagram and a Chart are explained fully at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/help\/fh6\/hh_start.htm#workingdiagramsandcharts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Working Diagrams and Charts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Diagram Window<\/h2>\n<p>Diagrams and charts are displayed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/help\/fh6\/hh_start.htm#diagramwindow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Diagram Window<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Information<\/h2>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>Diagram Root<\/h3><\/summary><div class=\"lightweight-accordion-body\"><p>All Diagrams have a root. This is the person from which the diagram &#8220;spreads out&#8221;, so in the following Ancestor Diagram the root is Ian Robert Peabody as it his ancestors who are shown. If you&#8217;ve tailored them, you can save them for reuse with the same settings as a Custom Diagram Type using <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Diagram&nbsp&gt;&nbspSave&nbspDiagram&nbspAs&#8230;&nbsp&gt;&nbspCustom&nbspDiagram&nbspType<\/a> and use them again (or delete them) from <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">View&nbsp&gt;&nbspCustom&nbspDiagram&nbspTypes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>Diagram Drag<\/h3><\/summary><div class=\"lightweight-accordion-body\"><p>One of Family\u00a0Historian&#8217;s unique features is the ability to draw a tree interactively.<\/p>\n<p>The following actions will work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drag down from a person to add a child<\/li>\n<li>Drag left to add a spouse<\/li>\n<li>Drag up to add a parent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><glwrap>Notes<\/glwrap>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The drags will only work on the appropriate diagram type so it is recommended to always work on a <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/all-relatives-diagram\/\">All Relatives Diagram<\/a> to prevent unexpected results. The simple example is you can not add Children to the Diagram Root of an Ancestor Diagram.<\/li>\n<li>If you change the direction of the chart (e.g. from top-down to left-to-right) the direction of the drags changes accordingly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n<div class=\"lightweight-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"lightweight-accordion-title\"><h3>Backing Up and Restoring Diagram Settings<\/h3><\/summary><div class=\"lightweight-accordion-body\"><p><span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> stores the settings associated with the core diagram types in the Windows registry, so backing them up is not simple.
