{"id":10980,"date":"2020-07-18T18:37:08","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T18:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=10980"},"modified":"2024-02-22T12:44:10","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T12:44:10","slug":"handling-renumbered-record-id-after-import","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/handling-renumbered-record-id-after-import\/","title":{"rendered":"Handling Renumbered Record IDs after Import"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes when importing GEDCOM from other programs the Record IDs get renumbered sequentially from 1, but you may wish that they are retained unchanged.<\/p>\n<h2>Details<\/h2>\n<p>Family Historian will often retain the imported Record Id, but for this to work a couple of rules must apply:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each\u00a0Record Id\u00a0must end with a string of digits representing any number up to\u00a02147483646\u00a0maximum.<\/li>\n<li>These Record Id numbers must be unique within every particular Record Type (Individual, Family, Note, <glwrap>Source<\/glwrap>, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that if these rules are broken by even just one Record, then prior to 6.2.5 ALL Records of ALL Types get renumbered; from 6.2.5 only record types which break the rules are renumbered and the others are left unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>If retention of\u00a0Record Id\u00a0is required, the original GEDCOM file must be corrected with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/link-type\/plain-text-editors\/\">plain text editor<\/a>\u00a0or a\u00a0Plugin\u00a0to conform to these rules, and imported again.<\/p>\n<p>A similar technique uses a Plugin to insert an Automated Record Id (RIN) with the same number as each Record Id number. Then after import, <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows.
