For example, many researchers find it helpful to include an extra column to show a woman&#8217;s married name. It is then possible to do a sort on spouse name which can be particularly helpful for example when sorting out burial records. Some researchers also find it helpful to add extra columns to show date and place of marriage or date and place of death. Many other column values are also possible.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Lists&nbsp&gt;&nbspConfigure&nbspRecords&nbspWindow&nbspColumns<\/a> dialogue customises the columns, and offers a <em>Save to Query&#8230;<\/em> button, which not only saves the customisation as a Query file that can be restored via <em>Load from Query&#8230;<\/em> button, but also allows the Query to be used to printout the Records Window details. Similar features exist in the <em>Configure Columns<\/em> for Named List dialogue. An alternative way of opening those dialogues is to right-click any Column Heading and choose Configure Columns.<\/p>\n<p>Use <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Tools&nbsp&gt;&nbspPreferences<\/a> and select the <em>Records Window<\/em> tab to adjust the <em>Record Type Display Options<\/em> and other settings.<\/p>\n<h2>Configure Columns<\/h2>\n<p>This tutorial is for <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V3 on Windows XP, but despite slightly different layout and colours, the concepts are still valid for later versions.<\/p>\n\n\t<div class=\"thumbnail-wrapper\">\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2DG5ib8bZH0&rel=0&autoplay=1\"\n\t\tclass=\"play-icon-overlay\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/2DG5ib8bZH0\/hqdefault.jpg\" \n                 alt=\"Adding Columns to the Records Window\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\">\n        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<p>Note: The above tutorial shows you how to add a spouse surname as a column in the\u00a0Records Window. If you only want the spouse surname to appear for women, follow the tutorial until the\u00a0Add Column\u00a0window is displayed. It has two fields. Set the\u00a0Heading\u00a0field to\u00a0Husband&#8217;s Surname\u00a0(say), and copy and paste the following into the\u00a0Expression\u00a0field:<\/p>\n<p><code>=TextIf(%INDI.SEX% = \"Female\",%INDI.~SPOU&gt;NAME:SURNAME%,\"\")<\/code><\/p>\n<p>or since\u00a0\u0192h\u00a0V6.1.4:<\/p>\n<p><code>=Sex(%INDI%,\"\",%INDI.~SPOU&gt;NAME:SURNAME%,\"\")<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and click the <i>Add <\/i>button<\/p>\n<p>Another animated tutorial, Using Lists to Mark a Diagram, illustrates a Custom Column in conjunction with other features:<\/p>\n\n\t<div class=\"thumbnail-wrapper\">\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L_zq5UZQXyo&rel=0&autoplay=1\"\n\t\tclass=\"play-icon-overlay\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/L_zq5UZQXyo\/hqdefault.jpg\" \n                 alt=\"Using Lists to Mark a Diagram\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\">\n        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<p>Beware that in <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> V6.2.5 the text in the <em>Edit Column Details<\/em> dialogue Heading and Expression must not exceed about 470 characters, otherwise that configuration will NOT be saved when <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> is Closed, so the Column vanishes!<\/p>\n<h2>More Example Record Window Column Expressions<\/h2>\n<p>You can test for the existence of a data item as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>=Exists( %INDI.RETI.DATE% )<\/code> will match the 1st Retirement Event if it has a Date defined.<\/li>\n<li><code>=Exists( %INDI.BAPM.SOUR&gt;% )<\/code> will match the 1st Baptism Event if it has a Source Citation.<\/li>\n<li><code>=Exists( %INDI.CENS[year=1901]% )<\/code> will match a Census Event with a Date in 1901.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0will match the 1st Marriage Event if it has a Place defined.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More complex examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>=Exists( %INDI.FAMS[2]&gt;MARR.PLAC% )<\/code> will match a 2nd Marriage Event if it has a Place defined.<\/li>\n<li><code>=IsTrue( %INDI.CENS[year=1871].SOUR&gt;_TYPE% = \"Census\" )<\/code> matches a Census Event in 1871 with a Source Citation where its Type is Census.<\/li>\n<li><code>=ContainsText( %INDI.BAPM.SOUR&gt;TITL%, \"Baptism\", STD )<\/code> matches the 1st Baptism Event if it has a Source Citation whose Name contains the word Baptism.<\/li>\n<li><code>=IsTrue( Exists( %INDI.FAMS&gt;MARR.SOUR% ) or Exists( %INDI.FAMS[2]&gt;MARR.SOUR% ) or Exists( %INDI.FAMS[3]&gt;MARR.SOUR% ) )<\/code> matches if the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Marriage Event has a Source Citation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In fact any such Column\u00a0Expression\u00a0would also work as the Boxes Condition\u00a0Expression.<\/p>\n<h2>Print Records Window or Named List<\/h2>\n<p>After using the Save to Query button, use <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">View&nbsp&gt;&nbspCustom&nbspQueries<\/a> to run the saved Query, and then the Print and Save options are in the toolbar top right.<\/p>\n<p>If only a subset of columns are required, then on the\u00a0Columns\u00a0tab delete the ones not needed, and run the\u00a0Query\u00a0again.<\/p>\n<p>If only a subset of rows are required, then select those rows in the Records Window and add them to a Named List as explained in\u00a0 Named Lists.
