{"id":10797,"date":"2020-07-12T16:44:34","date_gmt":"2020-07-12T16:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=10797"},"modified":"2025-02-25T10:36:56","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T10:36:56","slug":"finding-where-records-are-used","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/finding-where-records-are-used\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding Where Records are Used"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>There are many ways that the various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.family-historian.co.uk\/help\/fh7\/hh_start.htm#recordtypes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Record Types<\/a> can be linked together as illustrated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/formal-database-structure\/\">Formal Database Structure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The techniques described in the sections below can discover links <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to<\/span> particular records of interest <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">from<\/span> any other records such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relationship links <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to<\/span> a selected Individual record <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">from<\/span> Family records.<\/li>\n<li>Fact Witness links <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> to<\/span> a selected Individual record <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">from<\/span> other Individual or Family record Facts.<\/li>\n<li>Citation links <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to<\/span> a Source record <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">from<\/span> Individual or Family records.<\/li>\n<li>Embedded links <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to<\/span> a selected record <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">from<\/span> Rich Text notes in another record.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, they do NOT list links <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">from<\/span> a selected record <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to<\/span> other records. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Tools&nbsp&gt;&nbspWork&nbspwith&nbspData&nbsp&gt;&nbspPlaces&#8230;<\/a> opens the <em>Place List<\/em> dialogue, where you can select a single Place and click either the <em>Records&#8230;<\/em> or <em>Where Used&#8230;<\/em> buttons<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Records&#8230;<\/em> button shows a dialogue similar to <a href=\"#viewrecordlinks\">View Record Links<\/a> above for links to a Place record.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Where Used&#8230;<\/em> button shows a <em>Result Set<\/em> similar to the Plugins below.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, multiple Place names may be selected and the <em>View in Map<\/em> &gt; <em>View in Map Window<\/em> option displays them in the <em>Map Window<\/em> where all associated facts and records can be investigated.<\/p>\n<p>From the Records Window for Places, any records may be selected and the <em>Map Window<\/em> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"cs_v alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/helpv6\/mapwindow_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"41\" height=\"31\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 41px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 41\/31;\" \/> option to <em>Map Locations of Selected Place Records<\/em> will display them in the Map Window where all associated facts and records can be investigated. <div class=\"gca-utility clearfix\"><\/div>\n<h2>Version 5+ Plugins<\/h2>\n<p>Since\u00a0\u0192h\u00a0V5,\u00a0Plugins\u00a0are available that have advantages over the options above, as they show more details, and double clicking in the\u00a0Results Set\u00a0will open the\u00a0Property Box\u00a0with the details in focus.
