{"id":10631,"date":"2020-07-05T13:40:51","date_gmt":"2020-07-05T13:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fhug.org.uk\/kb\/?post_type=kb_article&#038;p=10631"},"modified":"2024-02-22T13:37:53","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T13:37:53","slug":"multimedia-file-formats","status":"publish","type":"kb_article","link":"https:\/\/www.fhug.org.uk\/kb\/kb-article\/multimedia-file-formats\/","title":{"rendered":"Media File Formats"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>Family Historian can attach any type of file to a Media Record, but only image files can be directly displayed within the program.<\/p>\n<h2>Details<\/h2>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> uses the term &#8220;Media&#8221; to refer to any file other than the core Project data file.\u00a0 The most common type of media in a typical project are image files, such as photographs and document images.\u00a0 <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> can display most of the common image file formats (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, etc, but not PDF) directly within the program, showing the image within the Media Window and reproducing them in Diagrams\/Charts and Reports.<\/p>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> does not dictate which type of image file format to use.\u00a0 In general, JPEG is most suitable for photographs, while PNG can give sharper images of documents, with their more limited colour range and sharp contrasts between the content and the background colour.<\/p>\n<p>Media are not limited to image files, and any other type of file can be added to a Media Record.\u00a0 Typically, these would include video files, audio files, or documents (either in their original word processor format or as a PDF file).<\/p>\n<p>There are three different types of media listed in the main <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Add&nbsp&gt;<\/a> menu, namely <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Add&nbsp&gt;&nbspDocument&#8230;<\/a>, <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Add&nbsp&gt;&nbspPictures&#8230;<\/a> (there is no significance to the plural here, it is just a minor menu inconsistency), and <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Add&nbsp&gt;&nbspOther&nbspMedia&#8230;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Selecting any of these options opens a file selection window, with the most popular formats for that type of media listed (e.g. *.doc, *.docx for documents, *.jpg and many others for images, and *.mp3, *.mpg for other media (audio and video files).\u00a0 It is important to recognise that these formats are listed simply for user convenience, and are not complete lists of file types that can be added.\u00a0 For example, even <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span>7, released in late 2020, omits *.mp4 as an example video file type, even though it may now be the most common format for new video files.<\/p>\n<p>Any file can be added from any of these three menu options.\u00a0 For example, selecting <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Add&nbsp&gt;&nbspDocument<\/a>, changing the file selection to All files (*.*), and selecting an image file adds the file in exactly the same way as selecting <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows. The &gt; denotes a submenu\">Add&nbsp&gt;&nbspPictures&#8230;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> can display image files directly, and a thumbnail image is shown in the Media Window.\u00a0 All other files are shown as an icon representing the default program for opening that type of file in Windows.\u00a0 Double-click on the icon in the Media Window to open the file in the external application.<\/p>\n<p>External files can also be added to <span class=\"fh\" style=\"font-size: 17px !important; line-height: 21.4286px !important;\">\u0192<span style=\"color:#73B262; font-weight: bold;\">h<\/span><\/span> by a process known as Object Linking and Embedding, with the <a href=\"#!\" class=\"cs_tooltip\" fhugtt=\"This is the menu across the top of the main Family Historian windows.
