This article describes the features that allow custom URL bookmarks to be added and edited to provide shortcuts for opening and searching Internet websites. The descriptions are correct for ƒh V7. Earlier versions have similar but fewer features.
Web Search Window
Use the Internet > Open Web Search Window command to display the Web Search Window.
After a URL has been entered into the
Click the star favourite icon or the … menu option Bookmark this Page… to open the Add Bookmark dialogue where the Name and URL can be edited before clicking the Add button.
Click the list favourites icon or the … menu option Search the Internet… to display the Search the Internet dialogue.
Search the Internet
Use the Internet > Search the Internet… command or one of the options above to display the Search the Internet dialogue that lists Website shortcuts and search parameters.
The Show droplist has four options:
All displays all the shortcuts
Standard Sites Only displays only the ƒh predefined shortcuts
Bookmarks Only displays only the Bookmark shortcuts you have added
‘Search Now’ Sites Only displays only the shortcuts that allow Search Details
The Search Details parameters and Search Now and Go To Site buttons need no explanation.
Click the More >> button to display a side panel of buttons to change, hide & show shortcuts.
The Show and Hide buttons and the Show Hidden option operate on all types of shortcuts.
The New, Edit and Delete buttons only operate on custom Bookmark shortcuts.
The New button opens the Add Bookmark dialogue which is the same as the Edit Bookmark dialogue described below. After clicking the Add button, the Bookmark is added to the end of the Website list but without its Name, so immediately use the Edit button otherwise the Bookmark will not be saved. (This issue has been reported to CP.)
The Edit button opens the Edit Bookmark dialogue to allow the shortcut to be changed. The Name and URL fields need no explanation. The Description field holds the text displayed in the box below the Website list when the Bookmark is chosen. The Template field enables the Search Details and Search Now feature.
The Template field holds the full URL including search terms for the website. They typically need the name of a person and years to filter the search. So insert the Search Details parameters into the URL to replace names and years by using the following codes:
<<<given>>> where a Given name is needed
<<<last>>> where a Surname is needed
<<<y1>>> where a Year Start is needed
<<<y2>>> where a Year End is needed
The default standard Website list is held in the
C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Web Search\Standard.fhi file. There is no
C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\... master installation file.
The current Website working list is held in the
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Preferences\WebSearchSites.dat file and includes the
Hidden status of each shortcut.
