Will Storage Consultation Paper and potential destruction of originals

Post by keca »

Apologies if this has already been raised, but I couldn't see it in the searches I did.

There is currently a consultation being carried out by MoJ around the digitisation of post 1858 wills and the subsequent destruction of the originals in a bid to save money. The full paper can be seen here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultat ... -documents. It seems that the MoJ only consider the Legal profession as worthy of inclusion in the consultation based on the distribution list in the paper.

There has been a petition raised which has 12k signatures so far https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/654081 but the deadline for responses to the paper is 23rd Feb 2024.

SoG has responded https://www.sog.org.uk/news/moj-will-co ... -response/ and urges people to respond if they can with responses to the 12 Questions outlined in the paper.

While I'm not allowed to sign the petition (I live in Canada and am Canadian), I have sent feedback via email. It's an atrocious proposal.
