Clone any Record Plug-in

This has been a great plug-in to use.

I wonder if at some stage (no rush) a couple of enhancements could be considered.
  • Allow the user to create a user defined number of clones
  • Allow the user to suppress the result set
I often use the plugin to create multiple copies of an empty "template" where many details are similar. Today I have 23 Probate sources to enter (this is by far the largest number of clones I've ever wanted, but 6 or 7 is common).

As I use a standard naming convention for files and sources, setting up the first one then creating 22 clones would be a great enhancement for me.

The second change is just that I never use the result set, so being able to suppress it would benefit me - but I do appreciate others will use it.

Thanks

You can post in LEAVE A REPLY on the Plugin Download page and that comment will reach the author, or you can send an Email to FHUG Username: PeterR who is the author.

Thanks, the annoying this is I did look at the plug-in page, but on my screen the reply section is off the screen and I did not see a reason to scroll down!

I have emailed him via FHUG.

Thanks again

Colin

I use that plugin a lot, and I’ve modified my version to do exactly as your second bullet. Posting a forked version is not good etiquette, but it’s a simple modification if the plugin is no longer supported by the author.

I'm sure the plugin is supported by the author as they updated it to FH v7 compatibility in January 2021.
See the Plugin Store and Re: Copy Child Branch Fields code snippet for FH V7 posting.

Update to v3.0 submitted for review. Default behaviour similar to previous version; now prompts for number of clones required (max 50).

Version 3.0 was published yesterday morning; (I was out all day). While checking the FH Plugin Help I noticed that not all parameters for iup.GetParam were documented; I have reported this defect to CP.

Iup is a moving feast, so it's always better to use the iup documentation online. The current version available within FH7 is 3.28 but if you want backwards compatibility you have to stick with what was available in 3.5. If you don't want backwards compatibility the fhUtils library provided with FH7 has a table driven wrapper -- see http://pluginstore.family-historian.co. ... Utils.html

What does clone any record mean?
And in what circumstances would one do it?
I do copy and paste census events (complete with the source and citation)

I suggest you read the description in the Plugin Store. It does exactly what the name suggests, creating a copy of an existing record. What you are describing is copying a single fact. This plugin copies an entire record.

Evelyn - I use the Clone plugin to create copies of Source records, in particular ones such as Grant of Probate, which I don't capture via Ancestral Sources - using the Clone plugin ensures I maintain consistent layout / wording in these types of source records.

Well, yes, I did read it before posting. But did not understand. It says "any" record. I have no problem with adding the sources and citations in fh7.
I was more interested in cloning people.

It will work for people as well, Evelyn -- subject to the caveat about family-as-spouse in the plugin description.

Another caveat with people is that it copies all their Facts, Source Citations, Media, Parent family link, etc.
So you could take longer deleting what is not required than creating the person from scratch.
