Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

create .jpg tree diagram retaining scrolling

Post by KiwiDigger »

My tree diagrams require scrolling to see the whole diagram. No problem, but when I save as a .jpg to send to other people the diagram shrinks to fit a window. Usually this means it is virtually unreadable. There must be a way to retain scrolling, but I can't spot it. Can anyone suggest a solution? Maybe a different format?

Use Diagram > Save Diagram As > PDF File (.pdf)... and accept the defaults to adjust size to fit into One Page.
PDF files can be viewed on any digital device (PC, Mac, iPad, etc.) with scrolling & zooming and retain high resolution.

Alternatively, consider exporting to ZoomPast that offers a novel online 'fish-eye' view of your tree.
Use the Export Gedcom File plugin to create the GEDCOM file to upload.
Unfortunately, it does not include Media photos and images.
You can restrict access to nominated users to keep your data private.
It saves you having to send PDF to all and sundry. Just give them the online link.

Thanks, I tried that but a box came up saying "PDF file output is not enabled".

See Family Historian Installation Problems Save As PDF File Output is Not Enabled for how to address this.

Have now enabled .PDF as suggested.
Two options come up: 1. Use Current Page Layout, & 2. Adjust PDF File Page Size so that Diagram fits into One Page (if possible).
When I use 1. the diagram is broken up into a series of pages with a vertical scrollbar to enable viewing of the pages above & below (but no horizontal scrollbar). The original readability is kept.
When I use 2. the diagram is shrunk to fit one page & is almost unreadable, which was the original problem.

I wonder, is there a way of creating a PDF diagram which scrolls horizontally, & vertically if needed, & keeps the original readability.

Try the ideas at Single PDF Page of a Diagram and use the zoom facilities within whichever pdf viewer you access it with?

If you are using Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the Diagram PDF then use the controls at the top:

AdobeAcrobatReader.png
AdobeAcrobatReader.png (1.69 KiB) Viewed 3877 times

The - and + buttons Zoom out (Ctrl -) and Zoom in (Ctrl +) respectively.

The 100% droplist offers various zoom options.

The 'hand' allows the Diagram to be click & dragged.

When 'zoomed in', scroll bars will appear at the bottom and on the right.

If the resolution is still poor when you zoom in, then the Scale of the original FH Diagram must be wrong. Try 100%.
