Merge Family trees to make a 3rd tree

Postby carolyn » 17 Apr 2019 14:36

I have a tree for my family and a second tree for my husbands family, but i would like a 3rd tree with these 2 trees merged keeping the 2 separate ones as well. I can't work out how or if this is possible? can anyone help ?

Welcome to the FHUG Carolyn.

Yes, that is possible by using the File > Merge/Compare File command.
See Knowledge Base > Merge/Compare File for detailed advice.
If anything is not clear then please ask.

However, keeping all three Projects is storing up trouble.
What will you do when you want to update your trees?
If you choose to update descendants of you & your husband, then you will have to enter the same data three times.
To update ancestors you will have to enter the same data twice.
The only alternative would be a filtered selective GEDCOM export and File Merge to migrate data from tree to tree.

We strong;y advise you just have the one composite Project with both you & your husband's relatives together.
It is quite easy to produce Diagrams, Reports, etc, for whichever sub-branch you require.
There is no need to keep the separate Projects in order to obtain those separate trees, etc.

Just to add to Mikes advice you might want to check out

One useful trick when working with a tree containing many branches is to set the File Root (Home person) to a key person in that part of the tree so for example at the moment I am researching my Brother in Laws branch, so I have him as the file root.
