Question on registration info in Help > About

Post by BillH »

In her posting Transfer downloaded Version 6 to previously used computer (16599) Sheila has a screen print showing that FH is registered to her.

I looked at my Help and it doesn't show that it is registered to me.

I am able to run plugins just fine. Is there an explanation for why my installation doesn't show as being registered to me?

Thanks,

You probably opted out of the Product Registration request.
Use Help > Product Registration if you wish to register.
I'm not sure if that About FH window shows any indication of whether it is a trial or licenced version.

Like Bill, my Help > About screen does not show the product is registered to me. I know I did register FH in the past, although I may not have registered each upgrade (is that even possible?).
I don't have a Help > Product Registration option visible, but searching the Help files for 'Help Menu' shows that the Product Registration item is 'Only available for unregistered products' . So I must be registered.

Stranger & Stranger ! :?
My About FH window says Registered To: Mike Tate but I also have the Help > Product Registration option.
I also get FH Email Bulletins which confirms they know I'm registered.

When I changed my computer a couple of months ago I checked with Calico Pie whether I needed to re-register, as I wasn't sure whether completing the registration box would have any effect on the working of the program.

They said 'Please click "I do not wish to register" as we already have your details on file.' So my About Family Historian window doesn't now show who it's registered to, though it presumably did on my old computer (the one where I first installed FH).

Yes I get the FH Bulletins so I am definitely registered. But I don't think it has ever shown my name in the About window.

It's not clear from the Help files whether the Product Registration option should not appear at all if the product is already registered, or if it should be visible but disabled. In my case it doesn't appear at all.

But it still gets stranger.... The actual Help Menu I see differs in other ways from the list of items in the Help files:

I'm not entirely surprised that the Help page disagrees with the actual Help command menu.
Calico Pie are not good at keeping the Help pages updated.
I've lost count of how many errors and omissions I have reported that remain uncorrected.

I see I'm not the only one that got confused. :D

I too have no option to register, but I'm sure I registered in the past.

I was a bit confused over being registered and being licensed. I thought maybe there was a way to tell if you were licensed or not, but I guess the only way is to try to run a plugin.

Thanks!

I've just registered to get the email bulletins, but there was no check that I have a licensed product, unless it was implicit in the email address for the sending of the bulletins, but if so I would have expected to see a warning about using the same email address.

It is not entirely clear what Product Registration achieves.

Opting to receive FH Email Bulletins is not dependent on having a licenced version or even the trial version installed.
Anyone can sign up via https://www.family-historian.co.uk/comm ... -bulletins web page.

My About FH window says it is Registered To: Mike Tate so I've searched Windows Registry and C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie and C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian looking for the text Mike Tate associated with FH but without success.
Thus I have no idea where that Registered To: name comes from.
