Wrong mother.

Postby Paulamoulton » 11 Dec 2018 19:57

I have used Ancestral Sources to create a family consisting of a Richard Green, wife Sarah Bruckshaw and several children.
Now I have discovered that one or two of the first children were born to a previous wife who was also called Sarah, but Riding. She died and Richard then married Sarah Bruckshaw.
I have added the new wife to Richard's record, but now I have no idea how to alter the records to show that the first child was not born to Sarah Bruckshaw but to Sarah Riding.
Any ideas, please?

Regards, Paula Moulton

Yes, see Knowledge Base > Removing Unwanted Relations.

Make sure Record Id are shown in the Focus Window via Customize View.

Then unlink 1st Child and add to the first Wife as explained in the article above.

BTW: You have managed to get the 1st Wife on 1st tab and 2nd Wife on 2nd tab?

Mike,
If you are referring to the vertical positioning of the two marriage relationships of Richard Green in the focus window, then the answer is no. The top one is the second marriage, and the bottom one is the first marriage. I have re-linked two children. Does the order matter? Or are you referring to tabs in another context?

Mike,
With regards to my last message, have used re-order facility. Seems OK so far.

Yes, the order matters if you want the two Marriages reported correctly in Diagrams, Reports, and the Focus Window as you described were originally the wrong way round.

The re-order feature worked because you presumably had entered Dates for the two Marriages.

Otherwise, in the Property Box of Richard Green the Spouse: tabs halfway down would have needed manually swapping round by using the two black arrows to the right.

Although the official recommendation is to unlink the children from the wrong couple and then link them to the right one, I think some kind person suggested I do it the other way round.
All the children show on the same focus window and, tho it is counter intuitive, you can link them to the correct pair, and then unlink them from the wrong parents.
It means you dont have to note the ID numbers or search for them again.
fh lets one link children to two sets of parents and working on censuses, it is something I need to do quite often.

Evelyn, certainly reversing the process does no harm, but I don't understand how it helps much either.
When using the Add Child link you still get the Select Individual to Add as Child dialogue.
There you must still search for the Individual record by Name or Record Id (the latter being more reliable).

Having the Child still visible in the Focus Window does mean you don't have to save the Name or Record Id.
BUT that only works if Record Id are enabled and the new parents are also in the same Focus Window.

Switching children between inter-married parents is a special case.
In the general case of rearranging Family links, reversing the process rarely helps, as the correct relationship and wrong relationship usually cannot appear in the same Focus Window.
So it runs the risk that having linked the person in their correct relationship, you forget to go back and unlink the wrong relationship.

Mike, I’m with Evelyn on this. Far easier to link children to new mother when they are visible in focus window, where they act as a reminder, especially if there are a few of them, then unlink them from wrong mother.

Deleting them first, means they disppear from the focus window, and you then have to try to remember all their details so they can be re-linked. Having them still in the focus window acts as an aide memoire. ( every little helps when memory get a bit flakey later on in life :D :D )

Yes, I agree, that is pretty much EXACTLY what I said, but it is a special case where one parent has two or more spouses.

I had been going to say that yes Mike was right.
My way (you are right it is to assist failing memory in old age) can be used only when one is moving a child from a first to second marriage of one parent -

Evelyn,
Why do you say it can only used to move from first to second marriage?

If father had three marriages, with him in focus, all three marriages will appear on screen, and children can be moved between any of the marriages. It is just a case of putting the right person (husband or wife) into focus. With multiple wives AND husbands, one may have to juggle focus person, but even in this scenario, children can be linked then un-linked whilst visible on screen.
