Create JPEG file (.jpg) with 300 dpi not 120 dpi

Post by penny.nash » 12 Mar 2016 21:09

When I create a jpg using Diagram/Save Diagram As/ JPEG file (.jpg)...
the image created has a default dpi (dots per inch) of 120.
I am hoping to create a JPEG file with 300 dpi not 120 dpi. 300 dpi is the requirement of my publisher.
I cannot find where I can change this.
I am using Windows 7 and Family Historian 6.1.4.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you
Penny

Just an idea: The Save Diagram dialogue gives an option to save as displayed. If you zoom the diagram larger, and then save it the resulting jpeg is larger and printing will yield a higher resolution. If there are photos, until you zoom to actual size of your media, you will get better, larger image in the diagram. You can test this and see that the greater the diagram is zoomed the larger the jpeg.

Penny,

I'm not aware that there is any way of altering the dpi settings within Family Historian, but it is very easy to load saved jpg files into a Graphics editor, including most freeware utilities such as Irfanview, change the dpi settings to those required by your publisher and re-save.

Dear ronk and mjashby,
Ronk, unfortunately your suggestion to zoom the diagram larger, and then save as a larger jpeg worked in getting the larger jpeg (which I also did need), but didn't affect the dpi.
But mjashby, thanks very much for the Irfanview suggestion, which worked perfectly!
Thanks both of you for taking the trouble to reply. It is very much appreciated.

Glad you worked it out. You wouldn't have to manipulate your original image. I had assumed that you would take the zoomed larger image and alter the dpi with Irfanview, which is my freeware graphics editor of choice. That larger image will indeed print at higher resolution when sized to the page.

Printing as JPG
What is important with these dpi issues is not so much pixels per inch but pixels per box.
With 100% scale and 100% zoom, if a box is one inch wide its FH Diagram default resolution is 120 pixels.
But if you double the scale or zoom, the box becomes two inches wide and its resolution increases to 240 pixels.

Then in IrfanView use Image > Resize/Resample to both halve the Size and double the DPI.
That will result in a Diagram the same size as original with a box one inch wide but using 240 pixels.

Playing around with those adjustments will achieve 300 dpi and a Diagram the same size but higher resolution than original.

Printing as PDF
An alternative technique uses the Family Historian PDF Printer.
Use File > Print Setup > Family Historian PDF > Properties and Resolution (dpi) and Scale (%) can be set to many values.
Use Diagram > Save As PDF and accept all the defaults to print on one page.
If your publisher will accept PDF then problem solved.
Otherwise, use IrfanView to open PDF and save it as a JPG which will retain the size and dpi.
This seems to produce higher quality results than the Printing as JPG method above.
