Hi all,
Good to be back!

Running FH v6 in Parallels Desktop Windows 10, on a Macbook Pro

My problem:
Publishing any report - I can see all pages on the panel in FHv6 but when I save the report as PDF the first page of the report is always missing apart from the headers and footers. Even if I print as pdf the same problem happens. It doesn't matter which report either.

There are no problems with the diagrams, they work fine.

I have been tried saving as both adobe pdf and FHv6 pdf, still the same result.

I've tried printing from other applications, e.g. One Note and everything is fine.

Anyone else had this problem? Any ideas would be welcome please.

Try using the Family Historian Sample Project.
Try setting Report Options to Installation Settings on each tab (Contents, Pictures, Sources, Format, Page Layout, etc).
If that still does not solve problem, try how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems under Save As PDF File Does Not Work re-installing the latest FH V6.0.4.

The sample project works fine.
tried resetting all too installation settings, no luck
restarted print spooler.

deleted FH Nova print, should I uninstall FH before reinstalling trial?

If the FH Sample Project is OK, then it must be something unusual in your Project database.

Does the problem arise for every Individual?

You can uninstall FH V6 and then re-install from scratch, but make sure you have original FH V6 installation download and both your FH V5 and FH V6 licence keys. If in doubt, do not uninstall FH.

had to reinstall FHv6 as I had uninstalled nova pdf.
however, on reinstall the sample project has the same problem now.

yes the problem arises from every individual.

I notice that I don't have the same issue on windows pc (i.e. not via the parallels)

I might try creating a new project?

Hi

When creating new projects the pdf displays first page fine!
saved closed and reopened at the new project is fine.

all the previous project pdf reports have blank first page.

Just to be clear, you can uninstall Nova PDF, leaving FH V6 installed, and then install FH V6 over the existing FH V6 and it will re-install Nova PDF. You can do that with the latest free download of FH V6.0.4.

You have checked your FH Version is 6.0.4?

Odd that the FH Sample Project now also fails?

If it is different on Parallels from native Windows with same Projects, then presumably it is a strange VM / Mac interaction problem.

I cannot imagine what it is about a new Project that has that effect.

Thanks for that clarification.

I backed up the project from Mac/Parallels to my server.
Restored it to my PC and the PDF report displays first page fine.

The thing that puzzles me is that when I create a new project it works fine so far.

even if I restore a project it fails on the pdf first page.

I think I've found a solution to this problem.

On page 103 of the Parallels Desktop 10 user guide it states the following:

"To create a PDF file, select Parallels PDF to Mac Desktop when choosing a printer. A PDF file is saved on the Mac desktop."

So from the report tab in FHv6 chose Print... and select printer type: Print to PDF Mac Desktop, then hit the print button.

This creates a pdf file on the Mac desktop called "Windows 10 printed document-1" with any further pdf files numbered accordingly.

Everything is in place as is in the FHv6 report window, including page 1!.


Therefore I cannot use the save as pdf option, but rather the print to mac desktop pdf option when FHv6 is running inside Parallels Windows 10.

I don't know if anyone else uses parallels for FHv6 but if I hope it's of use to anyone else having the same problem.

Is it worth me reporting this problem to Calico Pie? Seems like the Nova pdf printer driver doesn't work inside Parallels Windows 10. Maybe it's not a nova problem but a Parallels problem.

I am only guessing, but knowing that drivers dig deep into the OS, I wonder if there is some feature of the Nova PDF driver that uses some feature of Windows 10 that is not mapped correctly by Parallels into Mac OS.

In which case the problem should be reported to Parallels.

I doubt if reporting the problem to Calico Pie will help because FH & Nova are supported in Windows 10 which is what is being used.

But I will add the advice to FHUG KB against Parallels.
