Truncation of Media filenames on import from TMG

Post by JohnLiddle » 08 Mar 2015 12:38

Looking at the TMG data I have imported (using direct method), I note that FH has truncated the names of the media files to 30 characters.

Why?

Is this configurable?

I suggest you report this kind of problem directly to Calico Pie support at family-historian.co.uk and include some supporting evidence that must be in plain text. Ensure you give examples of the full file path name in TMG and the resulting truncated file path name in FH.

I presume it is related to TMG Exhibits being imported as FH Media Records.
There is no such limit on path and filenames in FH.

Oh b*ll*cks! - my error - it is just the width of the first column of the media window which is truncated (and I note, not configurable) - not the filename itself.

Grovelling apologies

Do you mean the width of the Media Records column in the Media tab of the Records Window?

If so, then just like any Records Window or Query Result Set column, hover the cursor on the line joining two column headers.
It will change to a vertical line with left & right arrows that you can left-click and drag left or right, similar to most spreadsheet columns.
This width adjustment should be remembered from session to session, and can be preserved for later recall via Lists > Configure Record Window Columns > Save to Query and Load from Query.

Alternatively, if you specifically mean the Media Window with thumbnails on the right, then use the dragger in the centre similar to columns above, and adjust the columns exactly as above, which default to the Records Window settings.

You can make the column as wide as you like - only 30 characters are displayed.

Are you sure we are talking about the same thing?
On my FH much more than 30 characters are displayed.

Hi Mike,

my Media Record window is not quite the same as yours, but you will note the truncation of the names.

Those Media Record titles appear to be derived from the linked File name truncated to 30 chars.

Please click on the [+] expand button to show the full details of a truncated Media Record.

Do the TMG Exhibits that match these FH Media Records have a Title distinct from their Filename, or is their Title blank?

If the TMG Exhibit Title is blank, then I suspect FH is using the first 30 chars of Filename rather than leaving the FH Media Title blank.

Hi Mike,

I have cracked it!

It is a TMG quirk.

Having looked at one of the Media Records ("Exhibits" in TMG) I have discovered the following.

TMG gives each exhibit a name which for reasons unknown it calls the "Topic". You can specify your own (I was not aware of this and have never done so) or in the absence of a user-inputted name, it seems TMG takes the first 30 characters of the file name as the "Topic". As far as I can make out, there is no facility for the user to configure this name length.

Clearly, this (in some cases truncated) name is what FH has extracted from the TMG database when doing the transfer.

So I shall just have to live with it, or go through each affected media record and add the lost characters by cut and paste from the filename.

Sorry to have brought up a herring rouge, but at least we know FH is doing its job!

OK, at least now we know.

The attached Plugin will move each Filename to the Title wherever it is a truncated filename.

Mike,

many thanks for the plugin.

Unfortunately, when I ran it I got:-

Sorry, I can only think that some Media have no Filename or an unusual value.
Try this one that should cope better.

Mike,

many thanks for the latest plugin - it did the trick and saved me a load of work - much appreciated.

Is it something that should be mentioned in the "Transfer from TMG" section?

Best wishes
