Individual Narrative Report problems

Post by BillH »

FH 6.0.0.3.

Two problems in Individual Narrative report.
image1.jpg

On the third line, the superscripts for the citations rather than being at the end of the place are overlaying the C in the word County.

Also on the third line, there are no spaces after the period in the best man line and before the bridesmaid line.

I then created a new witness type called Maid of Honor and changed Janet from being bridesmaid to Maid of Honor and regenerated the report. The superscript problem went away, but now Janet is not appearing in the report at all.

Shouldn't witness types that you add also be included in reports?

I figured out how to update the sentence for the marriage fact witnesses and added maid of honor and that works fine. However, I am still having the initial two problems.

I just noticed something else about the sentences in the report. The witness sentences are getting placed between the marriage place sentence and the marriage address sentence. This reads kind of funny. If there is both a place and an address being reported, is there a way to have the witness sentences come after the address sentence?

Or even better, integrate the Address before the Place.

Mike,

Yes that would be ideal. It would be nice if all reports supported something like:

... <at {address}> {place} ...

for all facts.

EDIT: OK... it looks like I can get this by changing the sentence structure for all facts to include this code. Should have tried that before I replied. .

I have not checked but that should be possible in Narrative Reports, by adjusting all the Sentence Templates, and in Report Options unticking Inc Event/Attr Adresses.

BillH - I can't reproduce the problem of the citations overlaying other text - any suggestions as to how make that happen?

The problem of the lack of a space between the best man and bridesmaid sentences can be fixed by adjusting the role clauses. Previously they all had gaps between them e.g.

<The best man was {role(single)=Best man}.> <{role(single)=bridesmaid} was a bridesmaid.>

In 6.0.0.4 these will be changed remove the gaps between the angle brackets and insert it after the full-stop like this:

<The best man was {role(single)=Best man}. ><{role(single)=bridesmaid} was a bridesmaid.>

I recommend that all customisations should be adjusted the same way.

Simon,

In 6.0.0.4 I am still seeing the same problem with no spaces between the witnesses. This is what the sentence looks like. I don't believe I customized the default sentence. At least I don't remember having done so and don't really know where to look to do so.

{individual} married {spouse/her/him} {date} <at {address}> {place} {their ages}. <{role(single)=Best man} was best man.> <{role(single)=maid of honor} was maid of honor.> <{role(single)=bridesmaid} was a bridesmaid.> <{role(plural)=bridesmaid} were bridesmaids.> <The marriage was witnessed by {role=witness}.> <The ceremony was conducted by {role=minister}.> <The ceremony was conducted by {role=priest}.> <The ceremony was conducted by {role=rabbi}.>

I think Simon is saying wherever the template has .> < replace it with . ><
i.e.
Move the space to between the full-stop and the angle-bracket.

Perform the change using Tools > Fact Types > Marriage > Edit and change the Sentence Template.

Mike,

Simon said he would chang the sentence in 6.0.0.4, but I am not seeing that change, so I guess I must have customized the sentence. I'll go in and manually change it.

Thanks,
Bill

Yes, yours starts:
{individual} married {spouse/her/him} {date} <at {address}> {place} {their ages}. <{role(single)=Best man} was best man.> <{role(single)=maid of honor} was maid of honor.>

Whereas the default is much shorter:
{individual} married {spouse/her/him} {date} {place} {their ages}. <The best man was {role(single)=Best man}. >

You can differentiate customised form default, because customised have a white background, whereas default have a grey background.

Can this thread move to Resolved?

Mike,

Where would I see this difference in backgrounds between customized and default?

In the Facts tab of Property Box in the Sentence box at the bottom, but only if just that fact was customised.

But maybe you customised it globally using Tools > Fact Types > Marriage > Edit in which case the way to tell if has been customised is to use Installation Settings and see if the Sentence Template changes. Remember to click Cancel to retain any customisations.

Re: Individual Narrative Report problems

I moved this from Resolved back to Issues because the very first problem mentioned in the post is still happening in 6.0.0.5.

The superscripts for the citations are sometimes overlaying the beginning of a sentence. In the following cases it looks like the superscripts for the burial sentence are overlaying the beginning of the sentence rather than being on a new line.
image1.jpg
image1.jpg (99.9 KiB) Viewed 13507 times
image2.jpg
image2.jpg (60.36 KiB) Viewed 13507 times
However, this isn't always happening as shown by this example.
image3.jpg
image3.jpg (85.17 KiB) Viewed 13507 times
Maybe the problem only occurs if there isn't enough room at the end of the sentence to fit all of the superscripts and it can't figure out how to go to a new line for just superscripts (or something like that).

Thanks,
Bill

Some additional information.

My sentence template for the Death fact.

{individual} died {date} <at {address}> {place} {age}. <Cause of death was given as {cause}.> <The death was witnessed by {role=witness}.>

My sentence template for the burial fact.

{individual} was buried {date} <at {address}> {place} {age}. <The burial was attended by {role=attender}.> <The minister at the burial was {role=minister}.> <The rabbi at the burial was {role=rabbi}.> <The priest at the burial was {role=priest}.>

I am using all installation defaults for the Report Options Main tab with the exception that I include Event/Attr Addresses.

I am using all installation defaults for the Report Options Sources tab.

I think you are correct Bill as there is an examle in the FH Sample Project.

Simply Publish > Narrative Report > Individual Narrative for Anthony Edward MUNRO [1] with all default Installation Settings.

About halfway down first page where ... She married Nigel ANDERSON ... the superscript 4 that should be at end of sentence after England. is at start of line, and next line is indented.

Reduce the Report Options > Page Layout > Left/Right margins and all is OK.

Mike,

I tried reducing the margins from .5 to .4 and it did fix the problem example I posted, but it created the same problem on another line in the report that was ok at .5. I think Calico Pie needs to fix it so it works with any margin.

I agree Bill, I was simply proving that it was the juxtaposition of the end of the sentence and the margin that invoked the misplacement of the index, and a small adjustment of margin put that example right.

I did not mean to suggest it was a workable solution.

Mike,

My misunderstanding. Hopefully Calico Pie will still be looking at these issues in the Beta forums. I saw your other post about about where best to post V6 problems.

I am seeing the same problems in the Descendants by Generation report. Not knowing if Calico Pie is looking at the Beta forums any longer, I went ahead and reported this to Calico Pie support.

Yes, the same problem will afflict all Narrative Reports.

I understand from Jane that she plans to propagate the Beta Issues to Calico Pie.

That is why I am maintaining the Index to FH V6 Issues in other Forums (12020) so she does not have to search elsewhere for problem postings.

It is a shame that it has not been made clear to everyone what the best reporting method should be.
