How to save into separate files

Post by ChetN »

I have over 14,000 names in the one project file and would like to separate into several individual files. So far I have considered the following steps (tedious as they seem):
  • Save several copies of the original file under new file names.
  • 1. Create diagrams of each family grouping.
  • 2. Block-delete records, leaving only the family tree wanted.
  • 3. Save the file.
  • Open a second copy and repeat the above three steps.
There has got to be a better way, any ideas would be appreciated.

My advise would be not to do it.

I did it, splitting it by grandparents. I then got a better pc and then wanted to re-combine - and it all went horribly.

My current project has 34,000 individuals and through queries and named lists I can manage it.

This request has cropped up regularly, and the general advice is do NOT do it.
Several users have found it awkward to manage multiple parts of effectively one family tree, and finished up merging back together.

Could you perhaps explain your thinking behind the request?
Why do you feel you need to split?

Thanks all for the feedback. I will not mess with what already works.

It was my idea to break the file into segments, especially the trees of in-laws. I thought it would be easier to manage all the records.

The idea about named lists seems a good option. I'll give it a go.
