Ancestral Sources not updating FH6

Post by Johnr65 »

I've tried twice to use AS to put a marriage on to FH6, entered all the required information but when I press save it doesn't put the info on to FH6?
This seems to be a recent occurrence -has anything changed?

Are you sure AS is operating with the same project as FH?

Of course I've always used AS with my current tree on FH6.

Sorry to be blunt, but 'of course' usually means somebody didn't check.

Are both programmes using the same file name within the same project name in the same location? A mismatch is almost always the cause of this sort of problem.

Have you made any changes recently on your system?

Does it work for somethings other than marriages?

How are you invoking Ancestral Sources?

PS: I've moved this to the Ancestral Sources forum as it isn't about a Plugin.

Open AS and use Tools > View Log Files. The next window will display the full file path of the gedcom which has been modified, and a list of the recent changes made. Does the file path match the path shown for your usual project in the FH Project window? Does the list of changes include the most recent marriage data you have entered?

Hello Lorna,
Yes to both your questions, it says in log:
Family record 8963 was referenced
Deleted existing Marriage fact
Added fact Marriage
Added a witness role: Witness for Marriage with name: William H Hogarth
Added a witness role: Witness for Marriage with name: Mrs William H Hogarth
Created multimedia record ID: 5071: Marriage Weston, York, Ontario, Canada (United Church) 15 Nov 1930 Orville Cox & Merle Eileen Linton(Media\census\marriage\48784_556748-01299 2.jpg)
Created source record with ID 42584, Title: Marriage Weston, York, Ontario, Canada (United Church) 15 Nov 1930 Orville Cox & Merle Eileen Linton
Added link to multimedia object ID 5071
Added link to repository ID 166
Individual record Orville COX [24267]
Added fact Residence
Added fact Occupation
Added fact Religion
Amended existing birth details
Individual record Merle Eileen LINTON [19059]
Added fact Residence
Added fact Religion

The project is the same for both FH6 and AS and ged according to AS log but it doesn't appear to be transcribing the facts to the FH program?

John, just to confirm your assertion, please post a screenshot of the AS Tools > Log File and the FH File > File Statistics showing the full .ged file path in both cases.

It says the files are too big to attach!
Therefore:

That seems conclusive, so what can be preventing AS from writing the data?

I presume you did not get the popup message in FH saying that another application had changed the Project?

I presume you have had your FH Projects on the E: drive for some time?
Does FH itself allow you to add a Marriage event and Save the Project?

This may not help but I have had the same thing occur with Census records. In each case, it was while I was inputting a number of Census records and during the final one I got the popup in AS saying the project had been changed / did I want to refresh AS. I answered Yes and then shortly after Saved the record in AS - nothing related to the final record had been recorded in FH.

I subsequently extended the auto save option in FH and also, when I know I am going to be adding multiple records via AS, I now close FH once AS is open (via the Plugin).

My FH program has always been in that folder, and, like jbtapscott said it happened before to me when I was entering someone on the 1939 register on AS.
The only way I can enter a marriage, census record, etc, now is to ignore AS which is a great shame as I have to put the media on separately with the person.

As Brent has suggested, try closing FH after you have launched AS.

Alternatively, try temporarily disabling Autosave via the File > Project Window Autosave top right.

BTW: You did not answer the questions about FH popup messages, nor whether FH can add facts, nor whether AS gets refresh popup messages.

I usually get pop up messages after filling in the AS information but not in the recent past as obviously it's not doing it's job! Don't see ant refresh messages from AS.
FH has to be able to add facts otherwise I wouldn't be able to do anything at all on the program-it is AS that is causing my problems as instead of it adding the facts to FH I have to!

I wonder if there have been any recent Windows Updates that have upset AS?
There certainly have been several for .NET that AS relies on.
So try re-installing AS using its latest download (no need to uninstall AS beforehand).

If that does not help then Email Nick Walker as advised in the AS Help > Introduction > Warranty and Support.

Some things to try...

Does your file validate correctly in Family Historian (File->Validate)?

With Family Historian closed...

Does the modified date/time on the file 'E:\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 010119\Rosser 010119.fh_data\Rosser 010119.ged' change when you save it in AS? If it does then this suggests the file is being saved. If you open up the file and look at the records window you should be able to see the date/time of the most recently modified individuals by sorting on the 'Updated' column. Does this give any indication that the individuals that AS dealt with were modified.

When the save in AS completes, presumably it all clears as usual afterwards, ready for another entry? If you have a look in the Documents\Ancestral Sources\Backups (assuming you've not moved it), is a backup automatically made when it saves? If it does then immediately create a second entry in Ancestral Sources without opening Family Historian and save, I'd be interested to know if the first entry is in the backup it makes.

Thanks

Nick

I am totally confused by your solution, Nick, I don't understand what you want me to do? As Mike knows I am a technophobe and playing about with files is beyond me unless explained in steps that I can understand.

I have also noticed that when I launch AS :?: , it doesn't show the named person but is just a blank form? It used to show the name of the person from FH?

John, how do you launch AS? There are two methods: one uses a plugin (Ancestral Sources Data Entry) and one launches it just like any other programme from e.g. you Start menu?

I have now succeeded in making AS work properly!
I deleted the previous version from my computer (which incidentally was the correct version) and downloaded the same version from the download page which I then uploaded to my pc. After that it now appears to work normally but why I don't understand?

Did you not see my posting yesterday Wed 4th Sep 2019 17:51 ?

That explained a possible reason for failure, and suggested re-installation of AS.

Yes I did see it but thought I'd try to explore other avenues first. I still don't understand why if it was exactly the same version of AS why it didn't work before? :?:

I did try to explain but I will repeat the explanation.

AS relies on the Microsoft .NET product that gets installed along with AS.
Windows Updates regularly installs updates to Microsoft .NET and there have been several recently.
I suspect one of those updates to Microsoft .NET has upset its interface with AS and prevented writing to GEDCOM.
Reinstalling AS has re-established the interface with Microsoft .NET.

I don't really think this is anything to do with updates to. Net or links between AS and, net because it doesn't really work like that. Also everyone will get similar updates but I'm not aware of others having this problem. I think something else unrelated to the AS program was happening here, probably something to do with settings, but we'll probably never know now.

I am just adding this in case people are not aware.

Have any of the people who have been having this problem had the latest Windows 10 update (version 1803) applied?p to their PCs?

My update to 1803 has screwed up my Microsoft profile my adding “.000” to my UserID which also affects my myDocuments folder which is now called David.000 and is still affecting my outlook account.

For more info here is just one of many articles relating to how to resolve the issue.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo ... progeneral

This can affect folder permissions or default folders where files may be located.
