Problem with notifications

Post by Gowermick »

I received a notification that someone has posted to a topic I’m following, yet when I login to view the topic ( not via link in e-mail), I find the posts already marked as read, so I am not able to goto first unread post!
I had noticed it before, but thought it was something I was doing wrong.

Has anything changed recently concerning notifications?

Mike,

Not sure this is what you are experiencing, but I've seen something that looks kind of like that when I've been signed out of the forums. If that is the case, signing back in worked for me.

This is a guess, but I wonder if a user editing a posting triggers such notifications.
However, when a posting is edited, its status does not change to unread.
I am guilty of editing any posting (not just mine) to correct misleading or incomplete details, rather than add a posting of my own to clarify the details.

Miketate,
Whilst that may be a cause, it has happened too often recently for that to be only reason.

Mike, that is an interesting observation. How can you possibly know how often users edit postings?
I edit mine (and others') most days, and sometimes several times a day.

As one data point, I edit my own posts quite often.

Mike and Helen,
Sorry, I misunderstood the point you were making.

But, invariably there is a new post for me to read, just that it is marked as read. This shouldn’t happen if I have not read it.

Just happened again! Clicked on the e-mail link to view post, taken to login screen, then once logged in, no unread posts!
Very frustrating, as I then have to go hunting for topic, to see if anyone has posted recently.

Gowermick - rather than having to go searching for posts when you lose the alerts, have you tried looking at the Message Notification list (link adjacent to your User name at the top of the screen).

Not ideal, but at least they will all be in one place!

Clutching at straws - there are links which allow the user to bulk mark all subforums/notifications as read. Could you be accidentally clicking on one of these as you move the mouse around? Just occasionally my mouse finger contracts and makes a selection of its own accord and this has also happened when I'm taking a photograph - very irritating

Following on from that, perhaps your mouse/keypad is nearing the end of life and is sending occasional spurious pulses as you move over a link?

I get notifications by email like everyone else but I never press the link. I goto my browser where I have a FHUG tab and open that tab. it lists all the notifications I have to read. I then start reading them

Victor, that is my problem. When I do the same thing, I often find I have no topics that I haven’t read, which is contrary to what e-mail is telling me!
