@davidf and I have done some work on expanding how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists|> Planning and Tracking Your Research.

Please let us know in this thread if there's anything unclear/missing/extra you would like to see to explain the possible approaches.

The section on "Working with External Applications" is necessarily a work in progress and davidf has asked for input To Do Lists / Work Management: What External Apps may people use? (16814)

I prefer to use Evernote for my Notes and To Do planning and there is a particular Evernote feature that may help its integration with FH.

Evernote can continually monitor a chosen folder and will immediately import a newly saved file it finds in that folder. It creates a new note in a chosen Evernote notebook with the contents of the file copied into the note. The filename is converted into the note name.

I would be interested in seeing a FH plugin developed that would create a file from an individual record or fact.

Thanks Jane, I have just installed the plugin and run it a few times.

The plugin runs and the note is created in Evernote but I think something is not right with the formatting as some of the children are shown above the primary individual at the top of the note. Also if there is more than one marriage then the first wife is above, mixed in with the children.

It is 6 years since the plugin creation date, perhaps Evernote has changed something in their note structure since then.

The plugin does look very useful though and when I get it running properly I will be making use of it.

One thought, is it possible to direct the note to a particular Evernote notebook rather than the default notebook?

Did you read the instructions. There is a template which can be changed to control what is output to the note.

Yes I did read the instructions and view the template but this is the output from the template as loaded from scratch.

The template provides for 6 children all listed below the spouse(s) but the output prints two of the three children at the top of the note.

Having read the wiki, in my mind there's a lot of manual adding notes for mundane tasks. When seeing this topic, I was hoping that some/much of the these could be automated.

For example you could automate the task Birth: Get cert from GRO by running a query on GRO index sources with type BirthIndex and once it's received change the type to Birth cert so it's removed from the original query.

Similar with the task Get image of familysearch record, I have a query that looks for all records in Repository familysearch with no images. Once I find them, I change the Repository to Family History Centre.

I have a similar (imperfect) query for Wills but that needs a flag to say that I have checked for a will and not found it

Other possibilities using a similar approach could be finding Land Tax, Electoral Roll, Death Duty, WW1 service, Muster rolls, Tithe Allotments etc etc

( I recognise that everybody uses Source, Repository and Citations in different ways and my way is not for the purist)

I think what I am hoping for is a to-do list to be automatically generated for the usual generic tasks that could be generated by individual and/or repository with additional room for more esoteric tasks and detailed notes

Have you looked at the how_to:research_planner|> Research Planner plugin for automatically creating routine tasks?

There are also plugins to look for missing census facts and missing BMD records.

I've seen it but not looked at it. I did wonder if it was V5 compatible as I think it was published in the V6 era.

Yes, was going to mention the census plugin in my post. It's the integrating of all such lookups into a single tool that I'm interested in.

@Stevie Steve,

If you are looking for a single tool to identify 'missing' data then my suggestion would be to look at using a 'companion app' such as http://ftanalyzer.com which has been specially designed for that purpose.

A specialist tool designed for such a purpose is, in my opinion, likely to be much more effective and, as reads your GEDCOM file but make no alterations to that or any of the FH project files it's result screen can 'sit happily' in the background as you work on your FH Data. Little point in reinventing a wheel that already exists, unless you can produce a better wheel!
