Sort Dates with no Links

Post by ColinMc »

I have approx. 40 Sort Dates in my Media List with no links

All the others have links, but these ones seem to be "orphaned".

Should I delete them? I have tried a File> Validate but it reports 0 errors. So are they valid records? I've tried searching the forum, but the search ignores the word Date, so it didn't show me anything I could spot as useful.

Thanks

Colin

Colin, I assume you have used the Order Facts by Sort Date Plugin and wish to employ Sort Dates in some way?

The Sort Date items are Local Media Objects and so should never appear in the Media Record lists.
Therefore, I suspect you have imported or merged your Project/GEDCOM which has the unfortunate side-effect of converting all Local Media Objects into Media Records.

You say "All the others have links". Do you mean all other Media Records, or all other Sort Date items?

Can you throw any light on the above scenarios, otherwise it is difficult to advise the best course of action.

Morning Mike and thanks for the help.
I assume you have used the Order Facts by Sort Date Plugin and wish to employ Sort Dates in some way?
In fact I had simply sorted the Media Records window by Links. I had spotted that I had a single jpg Media Record entered twice, once with a link to a person, and then a duplicate entry with no link. I just wanted to browse records with no links to catch any other potential errors. I found three Media Records (images) which had not been linked at all, (now corrected) but no other dups.

Yes I have done a merge in the past.
You say "All the others have links". Do you mean all other Media Records, or all other Sort Date items?
I was referring to all the other Sort Dates. But as I indicated above, all my Media Records now have at least 1 links.

I've also done a recent merge and have acquired the same problem.

I wrote a custom query to find Media records with title Sort Date; added them to a named list and then deleted all records in the named list. I then ran the Sort date plugin to re-add Sort dates where they were missing. I BACKED MY DATA UP first!

Thanks Helen for your input too.

I've done a Filter on the Media Window with the word "Sort" which seems to have done the same as your Custom Query. Or is there a reason to do a Custom Query.

I now have all of my filtered Media records in a new Named List.

Helen, I have reported that LMO Merge problem to Calico Pie and they plan to fix it in the next release of FH.

Colin, you have not really answered my first question.
Have you intentionally used the Order Facts by Sort Date Plugin, as that is what creates those Sort Date items.
Do you wish to employ Fact Sort Dates in some way?
Or are they all a complete mystery and no longer required?

Colin, the Filter will do the job as well as a custom query . I just tend to reach for queries rather than filters as my tool of choice.

In the Records Window with the Named List pane open, you can create an empty Name List and on the Media tab select all necessary records then use the Add to Current List green arrow button next to Named Lists Pane button as per how_to:delete_a_large_number_of_records|> Delete Any Number of Records.

Sorry Mike, I didn't fully understand the implication of the question.

I believe I have used the Sort Date Plug-in in the past when experimenting. I uninstalled it, as I did not see any use for it at the time. It was part of a process to look at several plug-ins to see if they were of use/interest to me.

So I have no desire to use any Sort Date.

So select and delete all those Sort Date records as explained earlier.

Good question
Or are they all a complete mystery and no longer required?
I do try and read articles for myself, so I'm pretty sure I would have read about them first, and I've re-read about them. So they are not a Complete Mystery, but almost certainly a Partial Mystery.

I am now ready to delete the un-necessary records.

Thanks to both of you for the help.
