Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Family Roots

Post by Dbruffee »

Back in the 1980's I began using a DOS based program named Family Roots to record my search data. When the publisher went out of business, the product was sold to TMG. Circumstances have dictated that I take a long break from the hobby and now want to get back into it. I have reviewed my Family Historian Version 6 and find all of my source data is gone. I have returned to TMG and the data is not there. I have every reason to expect it is still on the old Family Roots database. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might retrieve this data from Family Roots? I have considered setting up a virtual DOS machine and installing the program, But that would be a lot of needless work

Thank You

Dave

Welcome to the FHUG Dave.

I suspect that neither your FH V6 database nor your TMG database have vanished, but just been misplaced.
Perhaps you are not telling FH V6 or TMG to look in the correct location on your PC.

Anyway, if you are talking about the same PC, why would the Family Roots database be any different.
What makes you think its database will still exist all these decades later?

During the long break, what happened to your PC and its installed programs such as FH V6 and TMG.
If the break was much more than 4 years then you would have had FH V5 so must have upgraded to V6.
Is it still the same PC as before?
Has its Windows operating system been upgraded from say Windows 7 to Windows 10?
Did you take regular backups of your database files?
Those software forensics might gives us some clues to help you find your databases.

Try searching your PC for the Family Historian Projects folder, or any .ged files.

If that is all unsuccessful, then we need to know more about Family Roots and your current PC.
What version of Windows are you currently running ( Vista, 7, 8.1, 10 ) ?
What Family Roots installation media do you have ( CD or download file ) ?
This website http://bassett.net/famroots/ has some advice and was last updated Dec 2018.
The instructions at http://bassett.net/famroots/fr-pc.shtml explain how to install Family Roots on Windows PC.
It is dated Nov 2012 and mentions Windows 7, and DOS level has not changed much since then.
Also see http://www.ogram.org/familyroots/ and others from Google search for "Family Roots" DOS program.

MIke, as I read it, the question is about missing 'source data' not all data. Which did not make its way from Family Roots into TMG (and so could never have arrived in FH).

Perhaps Dave could clarify? And also if http://bassett.net/famroots/ is talking about the program he used?

Also, no guarantees, but depending on how complicated the program was, https://www.dosbox.com/ might be simpler than a virtual machine.

Thank you both for your assistance. I have set up Dosbox on mu PC and the program is starting with no issues. I believe the only problem I now have with running the old program is my new machine is so much faster than the old ones were.

I am sorry to be so late in responding, but, my wife needed to go out of town for a few days.

Thank you again
