* Best way to move between desktop and laptop

Hi,

I am still fairly new to FH and would like to be able to do most of my work on my desktop but still have the ability to occasionally work on my laptop. I backup to the cloud on my desktop and can therefore download from the cloud onto my laptop but not upload to the cloud on my laptop.
I would be happy enough using a USB drive, probably just as easy and maybe more straight forward. any recommendations ?

Also, I can see where the backup projects are stored as defined in FH, tools, preferences but cannot find where the live projects are defined on FH, but I know where they are on my desktop drive.

This is all information I believe I need to swap between my desktop & laptop but any hints and tips will be more than welcome.

As you already have cloud storage you will be able to use it to synchronise between desktop and laptop, rather than just backing up to the cloud. See this section in the Knowledge Base:
fhugdownloads:synchro|> Downloads and Links ~ Synchronise and Backup Tools
and follow the link in the list at the bottom for whichever cloud storage you use (Dropbox/Google/OneDrive). Then scroll down to the section headed Family Historian Synchronisation.

If you need further help, ask again here and tell us which cloud storage you are using.

Why can't you upload to the cloud from your laptop?
That would be the easiest way to synchronise updates entered on your laptop back to your desktop.
Alternatively, you can use a USB memory stick in either direction.

Your project folders within the Family Historian Projects folder on the desktop drive ARE the live FH definitions.

You also need to migrate any customisation & preference settings between desktop and laptop.
i.e. Changes to Options in Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Fact Types, Plugins, etc.

All those scenarios are handled by the Migration Guide above.

Also don't overlook Ancestral Sources that probably needs to be migrated too.

Just one question

When you have OneDrive listed on the File Explorer does that take up space on the computer hard drive or is it 100% in the Cloud?

Either ~ you choose ~ or any percentage in between.

Once you enable Files on Demand you choose which folders & files are Online-only files that take no space on hard drive, or Locally available files temporarily on hard drive but can be removed, or Always available files even when offline.

My hard drive is getting full and I have FH in One Drive will have to check to see if it is on the hard drive

I would NEVER trust having my master FH project in any cloud, fine as a copy for syncing or backup, but that's all.

My master copy is on my main PC and I have 5 other copies in different places (including in the cloud) which are updated daily from the master one. I even keep 3 months worth of archives (i.e. old versions) of my master copy in these other places.
