Fact Type Travelling

Post by Johnr65 »

Is it possible to set up a plug in or FH fact for people travelling from 1 place to another as an event. My Canadian ancestors seemed to cross the border to the USA and it's interesting to have that shown on the tree facts? I'm useless at setting up plug ins so if some kind person could set it up I'd be grateful.

Not sure why you are discussing Plugins John, unless I am missing something.
So I've moved this to the FH General Usage Forum.

Just use one or more of the following available Facts.
Standard Emigration Event that offers additional To place
Standard Immigration Event that offers additional From place
In Extended Set as explained in glossary:work_with_fact_sets#custom_facts_from_other_products|> Custom Facts from other Products:
Arrival Attribute
Departure Attribute
Destination Attribute
Origin Attribute

I can see what you mean but I've downloaded the extended fact sets for Travel and Military Service but can't find them so as to use them?

You don't need to download anything John.

Emigration and Immigration are standard Gedcom Events that have always existed in FH.

The Extended Set is built into FH V6 as explained in glossary:work_with_fact_sets#custom_facts_from_other_products|> Custom Facts from other Products. Just follow the instructions in that [kb]|[/kb] link to reveal those extra facts such as Arrival and Departure, etc.

Then you can use the Facts tab Add Fact button and More Fact Types... to add any of the desired facts in the same way you add other facts.

Fact type travel

Post by Johnr65 »

I used this fact type to record that someone went to Singapore from Liverpool but it doesn't read correctly, it says: 'he experienced travel on 22/8/1946 in Liverpool, England.'
Surely there must be a way of saying he went from Liverpool to Singapore?

This appears to be derived from your Travelling (15440) posting last month.
So which of the options discussed there are you persuing?

Can you post a screenshot of the Tools > Fact Types definition for the Travel fact you are using that shows its Name, Label, Abbreviation, Sentence Template, Fact Type, etc.

Then we can explain how you customise it as per how_to:narrative_report_fact_sentence_templates|> Narrative Report Fact Sentence Templates.

Re: Fact Type Travelling

John, as this is a direct continuation of the earlier thread on Travelling I have merged them into one.

Firstly, in the previous thread I advised against downloading and using the Travel1 Fact Set because there are plenty of travel related facts already built into FH V6. I assumed when you said "Thank you" that you were taking that advice.

Secondly, you don't appear to be using any of the facts listed in your screenshot of the Travel1 Fact Set.

You seem to have invented a custom Travel fact of your own, which is why you are having problems.

Please can you explain what you have done.

It would appear that you are right Mike, I seem to recall adding the travel fact to the facts list but was unable to 'format' it and there is another one too as 'Travel to' which isn't formatted either. Perhaps best to delete them and forget about the travel facts?
As you know I'm a technophobe when it come to FH and its many facets and the previous topic about travel bemused me too!
I just need a fact made up to suit my requirements as I'll never make a programmer at my age especially as I'm still suffering from very poor eyesight.

In that case the easiest solution (as I said before) is to use the standard Emigration Event.

It has a from Place for Liverpool and a To place for Singapore.

If you need it to say travelled instead of emigrated in the Sentence at the bottom of the Facts tab, then click on that box and change emigrated to travelled.

This seems to confuse the issue surely? If I change the text from emigrated to travelled, that's OK but the fact still shows Emigrated not Travelled which is completely wrong! Or am I misreading this idea of yours?

You are correct, but if you need to have a From Place and a To Place then the only standard facts that support two such places are the Emigration and Immigration events.

The only other straightforward option is to enable one of the Extended Set facts.
The best is a predefined custom fact named Departure but you could relabel it as Travel.
Then it will have that Travel label everywhere and its Sentence would say something like:
He travelled from Liverpool on 22 August 1946 aged 25 to Singapore.

If you are interested in this option then I can talk you through the simple steps.
Once customised you can use it repeatedly with no further programming.

Yes Mike I think using the departure option would be best as I seem to have a lot of my people travelling all over the place but not necessarily emigrating.
So please talk me through the process of changing it.

An alternative approach would be to change the 'label' and the 'abbreviaton' on the Emigration event to read 'Travelled' (which is what I have done).

But Helen it doesn't help if you need an emigration event, I need a 'travel' event as a separate label.

I just thought I'd suggest it.

I use it for travel for all reasons, with a note on the fact to explain the details (emigration, visit to family, deployment during military service...)

Personally I'd like to distinguish the travelling apart from emigration or immigration, as these latter 2 are major events in a person's life that is why I've posted this question. I think that when you print the reports about an individual and/or family it looks better as a different event.

OK John, to rename the Extended Set fact for Departure to be a Travel fact this is what to do.
  1. Use Tools > Fact Types and tick the Show Hidden option lower right
  2. Scroll down to and highlight the Departure Attribute then click the Show button on the right
  3. Now click the Edit button upper right to display the Fact Definition dialogue
  4. There change the Label: to Travel as shown below
  5. In Sentence Template: change departed to travelled and remove <( and )> around {value}
  6. Finally click OK lower left and then Close lower right

Thereafter, you can add the Travel fact on the Facts tab as required just like any other fact.
You must enter the destination in the Travel: box e.g. to Singapore to get a sentence like:
He travelled from Liverpool on 22 August 1946 aged 25 to Singapore.

Yes, you would have to include the word to in Travel: box with my version.

Perhaps you are not such a technophobe as you suggest, since you adjusted the Sentence Template OK.

A small snag with your version is if you leave that Travel: box blank the Sentence: will say:
He travelled from Liverpool on 22 August 1946 aged 25 to.

So to avoid that the Sentence Template: needs to be:
{individual} travelled< from {_place}> {date} {age}< to {value}>

or to put the from and to places together try:
{individual} travelled< from {_place}>< to {value}> {date} {age}
e.g.
He travelled from Liverpool to Singapore on 22 August 1946 aged 25.

The <...> angle brackets contents are only shown if the {...} code value exists.
So if either the {_place} from Place: value or the {value} to Travel: place value are missing the Sentence is OK.
e.g.
He travelled from Liverpool on 22 August 1946 aged 25.
He travelled to Singapore on 22 August 1946 aged 25.

I copied and pasted your {individual} travelled< from {_place}>< to {value}> {date} {age} directly into the box and it still doesn't give the person's age? Using the previous example to that gave no place just value in brackets! Bizarre isn't it?
I'm not really concerned about their age at travel so happy to stick with the first phrase.

John, it is all quite logically consistent.
It will only show anything for {age} if you enter something in the Age box for the Travel fact.
Similarly, it only shows a {date} if you put something in the Date box.
Also, it only shows from {_place} if you put something in the Place box.

If it literally showed value in brackets you must have used the wrong form of brackets.
They must be { curly brackets } and NOT ( round brackets ) .

If you have not entered an age for the travel fact but have a birth date and want FH to display a calculated age you can use {age range}

I'm quite happy with what I've got without the age; usually I let FH calculate the age for events so presumably that's why it didn't show it.
