Hi there,

This is my first question to the Forum after about 12 months using this fabulous Family Historian program.

Yesterday the Hard Disk Drive on my laptop died and today I had a new Hard Disk Drive installed by my computer guy. For the next day I have to load all the programs I had on my computer. Tonight I have loaded Family Historian program back onto my computer.

My question is how can I obtain all my family history information I had on this program before the Hard Drive died? What do I need to do - what is the process.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

How had you backed up your FH data and settings before the hard disk died?

All I can recall is that a message would come up when I leave the program to back up and I would click yes. I never knew what or where it did it.

The backup would have gone to the same hard disk drive that died.

If you did not have a PC backup regime in place then I'm afraid you have probably lost everything.
Not just your Family Historian Project data but all other documents, photos, files, etc, you held on that disk.

Did you by any chance use OneDrive or Google Drive to save your files to cloud storage?

It is a hard lesson to learn, but PC data backup is a crucial necessity to protect against the inevitable PC crashes.

Can your computer guy try and recover any files from your dead hard drive?
If not then sorry but you must start all over again.
