How to save a view
I know I'm being dumb here, but I cannot figure out how, having produced an arrangement of Focus Window, Property Box, source citation that I want to work with, I can save that view and have the program open in that configuration every time.
There must be an easy answer, but I can't find it.

Re: How to save a view
The easy answer is that it cannot be done. Sorry John.
FH saves a lot of window layout details but not the position of the various open windows.
Please go and Vote for Wish List Ref 534 Preserve all Workspace and Window Characteristics as few have voted for that.

Thanks Mike - I have to say that this is a major oversight by the program writers - other programs seem perfectly able to able to offer this facility.

Remembering state of window on start up
I've recently upgraded to FH7
Checked FH4 on laptop, I have focus window and property box floating, and on restart the same window appears, although it always reverts to the root person, any records windows previously open are closed on restart.
FH7: on reopening, focus window takes up entire window with property box floating in front (I usually have property box "floating") Strangely the focus window is set to the last person viewed, prior to closing.
I've tried all settings in preferences, to mimic the FH4 version, to no avail !
I'll add to the wish list as recommended by Mike
cheers

Re: How to save a view
Well my FH7 does remember my open window positions on startup, albeit with a slight problem with the property window, which refuses to open if floating option chosen, (CP are aware), but I only have to click one icon, and it pops back to where I normally have it. The citation window remains hidden, until I wish to use it, then it too opens in the last used position.
Not too bad, all things considered

Tools > Preferences > Startup allows you to modify that behaviour --
Untick "Display the Last Used Focus Person."

thanks Helen, although focus window still not opening at previous setting, yet "gowermick" apparently is able to retain previous view !!

Ian,
What version of windows are you using?
Have you tried updating your screen driver?
My PC had a habit of moving all open windows to top left after waking from sleep, but I found this stopped after I updated the driver. Out of date drivers do all sorts of weird things, worth checking them occasionally.

Re: How to save a view
I presume this is only the floating windows? If you tile the windows that aren't floating, does it remember those positions?

Re: How to save a view
Ian, when the FH main window opens what icons are on the very top right-hand corner?
Are they — □ X or is the middle one a double box and when you hover cursor on it does it say Restore Down?
If the former □ then try dragging the edges of the window to make it smaller and reposition it.
If the latter double box then FH is opening full screen so click on that double box and follow the advice above.

When I open FH the main window is : — □ X, but the focus window is full screen, within the main window with a double box, when I click it the focus window goes to the approx size I prefer.tatewise wrote: ↑02 Apr 2021 16:17 Ian, when the FH main window opens what icons are on the very top right-hand corner?

On my laptop FH4 the focus window opens within FH main window in the size and position prior to closing.
Hope that makes sense

Re: How to save a view
Does the laptop FH V4 open like either of the screenshots below and do you want FH V7 to open like either of those?

Hi Mike
Laptop FH V4 opens like the top screenshot, which is how I would prefer FH V7 to open

Re: How to save a view
FH V4 was a long time ago and I don't remember it having that capability but you will know better.
However, I don't think that is possible in FH V6 or FH V7, so FH lost that option many years ago.
I notice you have commented on Wish List Ref 534 Preserve all Workspace and Window Characteristics but you don't appear to have Voted and it is Votes that count.

Thanks for your input Mike, it just means one extra 'click' to get to my preference, life is tough
I think I have now voted on the wish list.

Re: How to save a view
Just another little niggle:
when I choose file root (myself), the focus window changes from the size and position I'm using, to full screen !!!
surely that's a bug ?
Ian
ps I'm still enjoying the program overall, although not adding any new research until I become more proficient

It is certainly not very user friendly!
