Error in Export Gedcom File

Post by jsphillips »

Hi all
after viewing several topics I decided to download the Plugin Export FH Gedcom.
I created my new download folder in this in Documents/Backup/Export FH Gedcom.
I selected 5.5 and jpeg for medoia.
I then ran the plugin and got the following error message:- see attached. Help Please
What does this plugin do that "Gedcom file tasks" "save a copy" does not ?
Thanks

I've moved this to the Plugin Discussions forum that is more appropriate.

The Export Gedcom File plugin is described in the Plugin Store as:
Exports GEDCOM and Media files in GEDCOM 5·5 or GEDCOM 5·5·1 format usually without FH custom tags, but with options for many genealogy product dialects.
See the Help & Advice pages for further details that include advice on migrating to every product supported.
i.e. It converts the exported GEDCOM and Media files to be compatible for migrating to other products.
What other product were you planning to export to?

May I make a radical suggestion :D when downloading a Plugin, read its description and if there is associated Help provided then read that too and it should explain what it does.

By contrast, the Gedcom File Tasks commands operate on exclusively FH V6.2 GEDCOM files.

The error message is complaining that the export folder D:\Documents\Backup... does not exist or cannot be written to.
Did you use the Choose Export Folder button to select that folder?
Are you sure you have write access permission to that folder?

Thank you Mike
Stupid Win 10
"This PC" was problem
I have 2 Internal Drives 1 Standard and one SSD
All my documents and backups inc FH are on the D Drive
I see that I have correctly created the new Folder in D:\documents\backups\Export FH Gedcom but the plugin is trying to put in in the C Drive ??
I assume this is the problem

I cannot see the whole message but it definitely starts with D:\Documents\ and NOT C:\
Do you see that?
So the Plugin is having a problem with the D: drive.

However, I don't understand why you want to create the export GEDCOM & Media in a backup folder?

Having problems with computer although powerful 24G RAM Latest I7 etc Dell is not very helpful etc
So for safety I backup my whole computer with Acronis monthly to an external Drive. But having Bios problems ,Guru is sorting.
I automatically when using FH 6.27 take FULL backup routine. I also keep a copy of the GED file and import it into FTM as a new File and also into Roots magic this way I have perhaps 90% of everything.
I thought that to ensure all my settings and media etc would be handled by this Plugin ?

So you hope to use the Plugin to create GEDCOM & Media that will migrate to FTM and RM with more of your data preserved?
In that case, use the FTM and RMT options rather than the 5.5 option.

Try restoring the Plugin settings to the default so it uses the Project's \Public\Export\ folder.

I cannot explain why the Plugin is having a problem with that D:\Documents\Backup\... folder.
If it exists and you can save files in that folder then the Plugin should do the same.
Have you checked you can save files in that folder?

Yes I can
I now appear to have in my new folder a gedcom file of 1KB
when opening it reports "File not terminated correctly [no trailer record found]
Strange ?? I feel that Calico do not like a D file instead of C
Thanks

What GEDCOM Export Mode option did you choose?
What was the filename of the GEDCOM file you tried to open?
Were there any other files in that folder?

As always when trying to investigate problems, please supply as many specific details as reasonably possible.
You know what options you chose and what files you are opening but I cannot, so I'm working blind.

My documents and FH Projects are all on my E: drive and I have no problems at all.

Bear in mind that the GEDCOM file created is probably NOT FH compatible as it is intended for another product.
So opening such a GEDCOM in FH may well raise errors.
