Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
Hi, I'm creating a book made up of a series of family group sheets for a friend in Australia who has probably never heard of some of the little villages in south Wales where his ancestors were living.
Looking for suggestions as to where to put them. Current ideas are as a second 'residence' entry for the census year so it's immediately visible, but possibly repetitive unless restricted to the head of household, or as a text section at the end of the book and include all the places in one go. Individual preference in the end I'm sure but would love ideas or recommendations.
Thanks

One idea is to build up information in the Place records for those Welsh place names.
You can add Notes and Media images.
Then have a look at the Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Place Report and select those Welsh Place records.
That includes your Notes and Media with a list of the people and facts that reference that Place.

That sounds perfect thanks Mike, will have a look. No 'people' photos at all sadly, but have found a few general photos of the areas, and taken snips of old maps, so could add those.

Yes, I would certainly include some maps, both historic and modern. This is the easiest way to illustrate how much, or how little, people moved during their lives. And also to ilustrate which villages have now almost disappeared while others have been swallowed up in bigger conurbations.

Is it possible to NOT include the people found in the location? It's interesting (and I'm pleased I now know how to do this), and I may include them, but it will add quite a bit to the book!

It seems you can switch off almost everything else but not the All Place References.
The best I could do was on the Report > Options > Format tab to set Heading Level 2 and Section Data to Size 1 and Colour White which reduces it to the table lines very close together.

Amazing thanks Mike, i had run out of options and one of my villages ran to 2 pages of ‘people’ references.
I do like the report though, very helpful if you have a large tree and want a reminder of who lived where! Much more to explore.

Not been able to try that yet Mike as my laptop has run out of charge! But i think that will obliterate the description for the place too as both will be ‘section data’

So it does. Bother! I had not tried it with Note text. Sorry.
The only other option is to report the problem to Calico Pie but leave it until the initial FH V7 hub-bub has died down.

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
Not a problem, thanks for your help. I may either create the full places report as a separate book, or do as i did in v6 and create an info page in word, add images, and save as an image then add to the book that way. Bit of a hassle if you want to edit anything, but it works.

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
Somewhat confusingly thare are two kinds of Place report: Miscellaneous Reports > Place Report to which Mike referred, and Record Detail Reports > Record Detail - Places.
Try the second kind. It includes Latitude and Longitude details and lists any linked Media records (as well as displaying them), but it doesn't inlcude a list of people connected with the Place.

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
I've tried your alternative version Lorna and while it doesn't list all the people linked to the places, it adds the file name, and the 'text', 'media record', 'annotation' and 'Use note as caption' fields which is slightly annoying. Not - so far - found a way to exclude that....... ideally i want to start the text at 'Treherbert is a village'. But I've sorted the naming of the image from the other post, thanks.

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
There are no options to adjust Record Detail reports except to remove the [Record Id].
They are meant to show all the labelled details in the GEDCOM database for the record.

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
Yes, I realise it would contain some 'stuff' you don't need, but it might result in a shorter report than the one with the list of all the people associated with the place. You may just have to save one of the types of Place report as RTF and edit it to remove what you don't want.

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
Dierdre wants to include the Place report in a Book so involving RTF is not feasible.

BTW The place report is a Lua report, so if anyone has the skills you could copy it over to a standard plugin and add an option to filter individuals included by a named list or something similar.

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
Thank you Jane, I keep forgetting to check if a report is a Report Plugin.
So attached is Place Record Report Version 1.1.1 Date January 2021 that can be installed as a Report Plugin.
It is invoked via Publish > Custom Reports > Place Record Report
It excludes the All Place References table but includes the Location: Lat/Longitude if it exists

Re: Adding village info to family group sheets or other reports
Mike, that's brilliant, just what I wanted to do. Downloaded 5 minutes ago but I've already added the first few to my book and managed to get the places following each other rather than on the the same page. Thanks so much.
