Project Folder location

Post by NickH »

I have had to re-install FH7 following installation of a new disc in my PC.
The program is installed on the C drive but my projects are located on a drive L:
I have gone to the FH Project Window, selected More Tasks and browse for project and then navigated to the correct folder on L: , the list of projects then appears in the Project Window with the location on L: correctly shown.

I can then open any of my projects.

However if I close FH and then start it again the Location changes back to My Documents\Family Historian Projects (on the C: drive)

How can I get FH to set my L: drive location as the default for startup?

You must set the L: drive path in the Location: box of the Projects Window by clicking and using Choose Location...
The More Tasks... option is only temporary.

BTW: Did you customise Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Plugins, etc, etc, and did you make backups of those settings?

I have tried setting the correct path in the Location Box but still after closing and re-opening FH it has reverted to My Documents\Family Historian Projects on the C: drive.

I hadn't customised the areas you mention.

On the project window, click on the location listed after Location:

Then click on Choose Location....

Then Browse to the location you wish to use for your default projects location.

Nick, did you set your default project when on the L: drive?

I have set the default location to my L drive folder, but after closing FH and later reopening it has reverted back to the original C drive default ! So frustrating!

Both those screenshots are showing the L: drive -- have you posted the right images?

Sorry, I meant to just post a single image.
This is the default it reverts to:

I notice that none of the projects in the FH L: drive directory is set as the default project - did you try to set the default as Mike asked?

Also the sample project is on the L: drive. Does that mean that at some time in the past the L: drive must have been set as the location?

Yes, Nick's OP implies that the Projects have been on the L: drive for some time.

Nick, try changing some Tools > Preference settings.
Setting the Default Project is also a good one to try.
Do they 'stick' when you close and open FH?
If not, then I wonder if FH has been installed with incorrect privileges, so cannot save some settings.
Did you install FH from an Administrator account?

Anyway, I suggest reinstalling FH with a new installation file from https://www.family-historian.co.uk/install7
Right-click the installation .exe file and choose Run as administrator to force admin privileges.

Now done that John, but still reverts to C default on re-opening !

When I then set location back to L the project list appears but no green default project tick any more.

That reinforces my suspicions about incorrect privileges because now two settings are not 'sticking'.
So please try reinstalling FH7 following my earlier instructions carefully.

Mike, you hit the nail on the head. I re-installed via Run as Administrator and now it remembers the location correctly!

Thanks so much for your help.
