Backup and Recovery

Post by tatewise »

Following the introduction of the .fhbak file type Backup and Recovery needs updating as follows.

Backing up your Family History Data
The last sentence in last paragraph needs replacing:
These backup files are standard Compressed (zipped) Folders that if necessary can be unpacked using right-click Extract All….
These backup files use the standard Compressed (zipped) Folder format. In ƒh V7 they are saved as Family Historian Backup (.fhbak) files. Whereas earlier ƒh versions use Compressed (zipped) Folder (.zip) files. If necessary, advanced users can unpack them by using right-click Extract All… in File Explorer, or utilities such as 7-Zip and PkZip.

Restoring your Family History Data
In the 2nd paragraph delete .zip

Version 5 and later versions
In the 2nd paragraph in two places delete .zip

View or change Backup & Recovery Preferences
At the very end of the 3rd paragraph replace .zip with .fhbak

I think this page could do with a significant rewrite to bring it up to date and link into options for backing up settings as well. I will take that on over the next few days...

I don't doubt it needs a rewrite, but it does already cover backup of custom settings using various techniques.

Done - new version is now live. I've stripped out all the old stuff on long-obsolete versions of FH and Windows that was getting in the way of what users need to know today. I think it is now much better structured as an overview of how to go about backing up and restoring using the options within FH, and gives pointers for more experienced PC users who probably prefer to incorporate FH data and settings into their existing backup regime.
