I sometimes complete one-name-searches from the GRO records for future reference and would like to be able to record such generic surname information within FH, but can't seem to find any area suitable for its recording. Can anyone offer any advice, as if not I'll post it to the Wish List as an idea?

There are a couple of options.
Create a custom attribute for the 'generic' surname or you can use the soundex function to find like surnames.
